A Lowcountry Backyard Restaurant - Featured Reviews (1957)
Saw a lot of good reviews about this place and I was super excited to go try it. I feel like I came into this restaurant with high expectations and I was just a little disappointed when it didn’t meet them. Everyone was talking about the seafood Purloo online and my fish was very rubbery and the rice had way too much tomato paste. Overall, the flavor of the dishes were very good and the shrimp and grits are worth trying here. The lobster bisque didn’t really taste like lobster and had an excessive amount of heavy cream. The desert however, was amazing . The banana pudding was sweet, creamy, and a great texture. The ambience of the place was very nice and they did have live music. The outside dining area is a little tight, but overall was a good experience.
We ate here twice in a week, getting take-out the second time after our meal so we could have their food a third time! Absolutely love the food. Impressed by the range of gluten-free, vegan/veg and local options. We loved: Shrimp and grits Mashed potatoes Fried green tomatoes and the sauce that comes with it Catch of the day sandwich (it was mahi mahi) on gluten free bread Tofu sandwich on gluten free bread Collards Lowcountry burger Also, Cookie is an excellent server and took time to make sure we got what we wanted in the best way.
Tried the Today's Catch Sandwich, Shrimp and Grits, Lowcountry Burger (not pictured), Seafood Purloo (not pictured), and banana pudding over multiple visits over a couple of years. All are delicious, and this restaurant has become a must-visit for me and my family whenever we come to Hilton Head Island. I cannot recommend it enough. Special shout-out to the banana pudding, it is the best banana pudding I've ever had, and every time I return I must have it again.
This restaurant is amazing! We found it last year and came back to eat here again. Their dishes are truly unique and delicious! Absolutely love the Shimp and wild mushrooms cobbler! Wife says the homemade Thousand Island dressing is the best she's ever had. The Key Lime pie was tart and yummy! Music is a throwback to old rock and roll and atmosphere is comfortable and laid back.
This was our first time at the Backyard and we both agreed it was the best meal we’ve had on the island in two weeks! The lowcountry fare is rare and a treat for those of us from ‘up north’. The Shrimp & Grits were the best with the Seafood Purloo coming in a strong second. And don’t forget the Banana Pudding. We sat outside on the patio under umbrellas listening to soft guitar hits that were not too loud. And the wait staff did a great job.
Phenomenal meal!! We got the fried green tomatoes to start - out of this world!! The homemade ranch & sweet pickles were the perfect accompaniment ..then he got the shrimp & grits & I got the wild mushroom & shrimp cobbler..inarguably in the top three meals I’ve ever had. Plus add two moonhattens with apple moonshine..chefs kiss.
We had a great experience here! We came in at 2:15 and they were able to accommodate us and our food was served quickly and steaming hot! We were out at 2:55! Everything we tried was delicious and our server was very friendly!
We’re traveling from out of town and found this spot on our way to our stay. It’s a small local restaurant with amazing food and service, thanks to Paige! Hands down the best crab cake (sandwich) I’ve ever had. Super moist and packed with flavor and look at the size! The collard greens were perfect and not heavily salted and buttered like I’ve had at other spots. The shrimp & grits was fresh and greatly seasoned. Same goes with Bischick where the gravy wasn’t heavy and the chicken was thin and breaded to perfection! Don’t forget the flight of moonshine as well! We highly recommend eating here and supporting their business!

We stopped in for a late dinner. The restaurant wasn't very busy. Our server, Hannah, was great. She was very efficient, but took the time to speak to all and get our orders correct. The food was incredible. My meatloaf and mashed potatoes were amazi

This was our first time to eat here and it was a great experience. The food was well prepared and very tasty with several good options on the menu according to what you like. The loaded hush puppies are a must. Also recommend the island shrimp tacos
Delicious food and great service! Tons of souvenir options AND they'll put designs on standard items right there in the store. Highly recommend! Pesto Turkey Panini pictured, and large ice cream portions!
50 year restaurant at Hilton head must be doing something right. We had a wonderful meal. Main course took a little longer to serve than normal. Thought they missed our order. Waitress was very friendly and full of energy. Food was good. Not a busy n

This place is great for a quick outdoor meal and drink. Our server was very friendly and interactive with our kids. The peel and eat shrimp were the best I had all week. The jerk fish sandwich was also tasty!
This place is under new ownership since we were here last year. We didn't have the best prior experience under the former ownership, but we noticed the name had changed and gave it a try for lunch and the Colts game. The food and service were great
