The Zafar Mahal, positioned between the Sawan and Vado Pavilion, is a red palace surrounded by water. It was constructed by Bahadur Shah Zafar in the year 1842 and was one of the last buildings of the Mughal Era. It was probably used as a summer palace. The Mahal is now in dilapidated condition.

By the time the last Mughal, Bahadur Shah 'Zafar', came to the throne, the throne was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. Still, 'Zafar' managed to build one structure that's endured: a small red sandstone pavilion that stands in a water tank in Hayat Baksh Bagh; this is what's known as Zafar Mahal. The water tank is dry now, and some long-delayed renovation work has been going on there for a while. Interestingly, when the British took over control of the Red Fort after the uprising of 1857, the British officers used this tank as a swimming pool. You can't walk to the pavilion itself, and since the pool is dry and full of rubble and other building material, it's hardly worth seeing.
