The 242-year-old and prominent red-brick building is what makes the building noticeable even from a distance. I was so fascinated by the architecture of the building. The moment I Planned for Kolkata, I wanted to visit this place. Was a little disappointed by the fact that we can't enter the building, so got a chance to gaze from outside. The entire structure is 150 metres long. It was once the place of work as well as residence for junior servants of East India Trading Company. The Writer's building is open throughout the day. There is no particular timing for visiting.

The majority of government departments were subsequently moved out to a new re-purposed building named Nabanna in Howrah on a temporary basis. The building has been called a mini-township of sorts with a built-up area of around 550,000 square feet. Before the shifting of the state secretariat, the building housed 34 departments of the state government, and served as the office for approximately 6,000 employees.[1] As of October 2020, the renovation of the building continues.

Serene! Took a walk from Howrah bridge in the morning to beat the heat and traffic. It was such a beautiful sight to see. The architecture is so unique and speaks volumes about the city. A must visit! Just for the beauty!

Writers building is a famous landmark of Government of West Bengal. It was the heart of the city in leftist era. Now, Nabanna, after becoming the administrative head of Government of West Bengal, it is losing its glory. Now it is refurbishment by the Government of West Bengal to give it a different look and preserve for a heritage. Most of the Government offices has been shifted to some other places remaining the building idle.
