WelcomHeritage Fernhills Royal Palace - Hotel in Ooty - The Nilgiris, India

The staff in the reception have absolutely no expression! They're just stones, staring at you with a question: what are you doing here? Sincerely hope this was a one off case for their sake as the property is simply amazing and doesn't deserve such staff. We had driven just for food and did not stay as the rooms here are known to be damp with a woodish smell and people with asthma tend to have serious issues. Passages are adorned with pics from over 200 years and people interested in this subject will find this hotel more valuable than the Mysore museum. You do get haunted vibes inside if there are few residents but would suggest not to miss visiting this place, if just for the food. Food tastes great but the price is simply ridiculous. I guess we're paying for the historical experience as well.

The location and the look of the property is a highlight ! They have maintained the property well. We booked four rooms. Ours was the Yuvaraani suite. Room interiors will truly give you a palace Vibe, BUT all the rooms had a strong smell of old carpets and bedspreads were a bit dusty. We had to keep the windows open for a while to get relief from it. Bathrooms could really use an upgrade. It gets extremely quiet at night.

Please read before booking. The property is in extremely poor shape. It is quite disheartening to see a room worth Rs 14k being in shambles. I will be uploading photos for reference. Moreover, the service at the hotel is really poor. While the receptionist, the young evening server and William (one of the other servers) are extremely warm and courteous, workers like Murthy are extrenely obnoxious and entitiled. For individuals looking to get a high degree of luxury, i would suggest they chip in 5k more and book the Savoy instead (even though i havent stayed there). PS The breakfast spread includes poha, idly, dosa, aloo paratha and a few other assortments. One would expect a tad bit more for such a premium price point. That being said, the in house chef is excellent

We expected to have great service. Great rooms as we thought it's a palace, but we found once we enter in the room the rooms was smelly because of the humidity. There is no air condition. No any fan , the room was so quiet the entire hotel was so quiet there is no any kind of sound and it's looks like a hunted house, If you're going with a small kid, please do not bring them because they will feel scared. The breakfast and the food was very lousy. Do not eat there. I asked them to keep a little music, so the entire Palace will not be like ghost house. However, I will not suggest this palace to anybody .

First of it's a restricted property so the watchman at the entry gate itself asks thousands of questions before letting you in. Once you are in the palace looks really magnificent and the views around are stunning. We went in for lunch in the restaurant but at 3:15 they said they close at 3:30 and won't take orders. Then looking at our one year old the staff decided to waiter decided to show some mercy and told us he can get us left over Chinese. We had not much choice so we ordered fried rice and some mix veg curry that waiter suggested. To our surprise the luxury hotel's restaurant food was worse than the road side cart food. We some how ate some and left. We also asked if we could look around the palace common areas but the front office staff straight said no. We also noticed that the hotel is not well maintained. The couches appeared very old so the cloth was torn in places and the bathroom was also not well maintained.

This is beauty personified. The palace looks magnificent in the red brick historic British architecture. There is a lush green huge lawn right outside the property. It also has a beautiful forest and the cold Ooty weather gives this hotel a beautiful yet eerie feel. If ever something paranormal had to find a place to live, this place would be ideal. But jokes apart, this hotel is absolutely normal and there is nothing bhootiya about it. The interiors are made of wood so occasional creaking sounds might be common. The maintenance however is not good and it is sad to see the place crumbling to time. The food is also average but the staff make additional effort to make the guests comfortable.

We stopped for a quick lunch at this place.. only one word to describe, it is a royal palace.. great wood work all around.. the food was great.. will be back for a peaceful stay at some point in future..
