Visakhapatnam Port is one of 13 major ports in India and the only major port of Andhra Pradesh. It is India's third largest state-owned port by volume of cargo handled and largest on the Eastern Coast. It is located midway between the Chennai and Kolkata Ports on the Bay of Bengal. Although the need for building a port on the east coast to access Central Provinces was felt by the British in the 19th century, the proposal of Col. H.Cartwright Reid of British Admiralty for constructing a harbour at Visakhapatnam was approved by the Government only after the First World War. The Inner Harbour was built by the Bengal Nagpur Railway between 1927 and 1933 to facilitate the export of manganese ore from the Central Provinces. The port, built at a cost of Rs378 lakhs was inaugurated by Lord Willingdon on 19 December 1933. During the Second World War, the military significance of the port increased. After India's independence, the port witnessed growth under the various Five Year Plans. Over time, the port has grown from one with 3 berths handling 1.3 lakh tonnes per annum to one with 24 berths and annual traffic of 65 million tonnes. The port was notified as a major port in 1964 under the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963. Under the Act, the Visakhapatnam Port Trust is in charge of running the port.

The Port plays a catalytic role for the economic growth by catering to the key industries in the petroleum, steel, power, and fertilizer sectors besides other manufacturing industries in its hinterland. Efficient cargo evacuation infrastructure is developed by the port for the transportation of cargo by rail and road. The Port owns and operates a Railway network of about 185 km., which is linked to the South Central Railway and East Coast Railway of the Indian Railways. Nearly 52% of the cargo handled at the port is moved by rail. The Port is well connected to the Chennai-Howrah National Highway-16 by a 4 lane connectivity road for the movement of cargo towards the North and South. The port has won many accolades in recognition of its services. Port of Visakhapatnam is placed in the top slot "Good" category in Port Performance by Dun & Bradstreet as part of a study instituted by NITI Aayog engaging 700 respondents pan India, on qualitative and quantitative aspects of business transactions at ports. Port of Visakhapatnam is declared as 2nd cleanest port for the third year in succession by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways during a survey done by the Quality Council of India under Swachh Bharat Mission. The port has emerged as the winner in the port service sector for outstanding achievements in Environment Management in July 2019. The Green Tech Foundation has presented the "Gold" award to the port for outstanding achievements in Safety Management in the services sector in November 2018. Port of Visakhapatnam is the 1st. Major Port to become self-sufficient by generating the required electricity for its use. The port has installed a 10 MW Photo Voltaic Solar Energy Project and also utilizes its rooftop spaces for the generation of solar power. In recognition of its efforts, Port of Visakhapatnam has been adjudged as the winner in "Outstanding Renewable Energy User" under the service sector in India as part of "Green Energy Awards, 2018" Port of Visakhapatnam is the only Major Port in India to have three international accreditation for quality environment and occupational health and safety management systems - ISO - 9001, 14001, and OHSAS-45001. The Port is also ISPS compliant.
