Victoria memorial was made in pre independence time around 1905 along with Allahabad and Calcutta of course. initially it had a statue of queen Victoria and the park was also called victoria park . After independence the park was renamed after Begum Hazrat Mahal and the statue was shifted from the park. Today the monument has been secured with iron closure.

The Victoria Memorial Hall is one of the most magnificent monuments of not only the city of Calcutta but of our entire country. Representing the resplendent and majestic British architecture, Victoria Memorial Hall stands today, as a veritable icon of the city of Kolkata. Located on 1 Queen's way, the VMH was envisaged by Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of British India, as a memorial to the deceased Queen Victoria. Hence, according to Curzon this memorial should take form of a great marble hall, which was to be erected on the Calcutta maidan to serve primarily as a monument to the Queen and secondarily as a national gallery and Valhalla of the Indian Empire. The national gallery which Curzon speaks about would in future take the shape of a museum. The Victoria Memorial hall was therefore set up to function more than just a memorial for the deceased Queen Victoria. The memorial was to be designed with a museum housed within its realms. The memorial with the museum would act as a "standing record of our wonderful history" This was to be a historical museum where people could see before them pictures and statues of men who played a prominent part in the history of this country and develop a pride in their past. Curzon's writing bring forth that it was a part of his imperial duty to put into execution to set up a "Great Imperial memorial worthy of Queen Victoria and worthy of India. Within few weeks after Queen' death in January 1901 a great meeting was convened in the Town Hall of Calcutta on 6th February, 1901, whereby a resolution for constituting an all Indian Memorial Fund for building of the memorial was moved. The princes and people of India responded Architects generously to his appeal for funds and the total cost of construction of this monument amounting to one crore, five lakhs of rupees, was entirely derived from their voluntary subscriptions. King George V, the then Prince of Wales, laid the foundation stone on January 4, 1906 and it was formally opened to the public in 1921.

Victoria Memorial Lucknow is a small but elegant monument built in white marble to commemorate the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. It is located in the Begum Hazrat Mahal Park, which is a peaceful and green oasis in the heart of the city. The monument was designed by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, a famous architect who also worked on many buildings in Rajasthan. The monument reflects the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, with a central dome, four smaller pavilions, decorated arches, columns and lotus bud motifs. The dome was originally adorned with a statue of the Queen by Sir W. Hamo Thornycroft, a renowned sculptor, but the statue was removed after independence. The monument is well-maintained and offers a glimpse of the colonial history of Lucknow. It is not as grand or elaborate as the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, but it has its own charm and beauty. It is worth a visit if you are interested in architecture or history, or if you just want to relax in the park. The monument is open from 10 am to 5 pm and there is no entry fee. But the park takes only 10 rs as an entry fee. And it will open till 7pm.

A beautiful memorial built for Queen Victoria. There is a park attached to it for happily relaxing. The building is built with white marble and looks awesome150 year old monument stands majestically in centre of huge gardens and water bodies on all four side. Houses a museum rich in history of british conquests in India and some unique picture galleries of kolkatta of those days. Small monument in a lovely manicured park. It's a lovely restful place to sit and relax. The monument is quite lovely and doesn't take long to view. Much smaller scale and design compared to theWorth a visit.

I visited here last week with my friend The experience was so good. You can visit in the morning for fresh air And listen to the beautiful song of birth.
