Valiya Juma Masjid is an important pilgrimage site which is one of the oldest mosques. It is situated in Ponnani in Malappuram district of Kerala. Also known as Ponnani Jum'ah Masjid or Makhdum Mosque, it was built in the 16th century AD. Ponnani, once known as the "Little Mecca of Malabar" and the "Jami'at al-Azhar of Malabar", was a prominent center of Islamic learning. There are some mausoleums of the Malappuram martyrs located in the vicinity of the Mosque. This place is prominently visited during the four-day annual festival, which is held every year in the month of April.
The significance of Cheraman Juma Majsid in the Muziris Heritage Project lies in the fact that it is the first mosque in India. Built in 629 AD by Malik Ibn Dinar it is located in the district of Thrissur in Kerala, on the Paravur-Kodungallur road. The masjid is believed to have been renovated in the 11th century and also 300 years ago. The front portion was expanded in 1974 and further expanded in 1984.
It is the one of the historically relevant Masjid in Kerala. It has a lot of specialities, as there the great scholar Zainuddin Makhdoom conducted his Dars. also the masjid follows early timing, which wasn't calculated by modern technologies. we can see some early symbols.
