It is the oldest hotel in the city. Established during the early days of the British oppression in India, this place has seen its fair share of history. Post independence, it has gone through a change in ownership and now is known as the Lalit Great Eastern hotel. A few decades ago, being known for its fantastic bakeries, now it stands amidst construction and operation. The hotel houses decent rooms and conference rooms, good restaurants and makes up for an nice hotel. It means one of the finest hotels in the city.
So I would like to share a few things here, though the experience was good and staff was extremely helpful. Buy something that wasn't right. We repeatedly called reception and confirmed we are coming by 12 for brush. No one mentioned that the food starts at 1 pm. In fact, even after 1 or 1:30. I did call the hotel before reqching the venue. They just said yes, please come. So the name should be changed to lunch and not brunch. Rest everything was right in place. As you know, the first experience stays with you forever, so this was something really weird. As we had to wait also 1.5 hours for food to be served
I am deeply disappointed with the food quality I experienced. I ordered a simple khichadi for dinner, but halfway through the meal, I discovered a significant piece of plastic carry bag in the dish. When I reached out to room service to complain, the initial staff member I spoke with was not apologetic at all. Instead, he promptly offered to replace the food, which shocked me. I insisted on speaking to the manager, and when the F&B Manager arrived at my room, they, too, lacked any sense of apology or regret.
Eventually, I had to request the Reception to have the Hotel Manager, Mr. Sarfarz, contact me. He apologized for the entire incident, but I was truly taken aback by the behavior displayed by the staff of such a well-known and reputable hospitality brand. Regrettably, I have lost faith in staying at this property in the future.
Furthermore, I noticed discrepancies between the rates displayed on the menu card and the actual billing rates, with the latter being higher. The food prices are exorbitantly high compared to similar establishments in the area.
The interiors of The Lalit is breathtakingly beautiful and surreal. The location of hotel in the heritage space if the city gives it a old city charm with all modern amenities. You can enjoy the savouries of Bengal and the hospitality if the staff are impeccable. This hotel truly justifies the spirit of the this old city. The location of the hotel is also very apt. Person who stayed here will wish to spend more time here for sure.
The oldest hotel of the city and possibly of India itself. Established during the early days of the British oppression in India, this place has seen its fair share of history. Post independence, it has gone through a change in ownership and now is known as the Lalit Great Eastern hotel. A few decades ago, being known for its fantastic bakeries, now it stands amidst construction and operation. The hotel houses decent rooms and conference rooms, average restaurants and makes up for an average hotel. It is by no means one of the finest hotels in the city as it once was. What makes its case worse is the pathetic service they offer. Many of the staff are not trained as much as one can see at other luxury hotels. Only reason they deserve 3 stars as far as I am concerned is the legacy of this place
Had booked a long stay (9 days) at Lalit Great Eastern kolkata for family with great expectations. However, the services offered by the hotel is pathetic as compared to any other five star hotels such a taj or leela, rather worse than a basic four or three star hotels. the housekeeping is poor and we need to constantly remind the staff for basic amenities in the room. Despite several requests, the issue of water clogging in the bathroom was nit resolved. For in room dining, the waiting time was a minimum of one hour plus for basic requests such as tea or warm milk (despite the exorbitant prices charged by the hotel for food). Despite repeated requests to the hotel staff, there was no improvement in the services offered by them. Except for the property that is the quality of rooms, nothing about the hotel is great. Overall a terrible stay!
Tried the lunch buffet. The food quality and display are very nice. Authentic Bengal cuisine. Nothing extraordinary but just a normal menu. I will surely appreciate the desserts and the breads which are all made in house.
The hotel's location is in the heart of the city which is the only good point.
Their legacy rooms are a BIG NO. They smell damp and horrible. The rooms are big but there is no luxurious feel and the lighting is horrible. The windows don't open fully and face the slum and drain area. Moreover, these rooms are far from the elevator so one has to walk a lot. We asked for a room change but figured that all the Edwardian Rooms had the same issue. Also, the washroom sink was bad. No bathtubs for the bomb price. Like I said, just big rooms and no amenities.
Coming to their service, the reception is unresponsive most of the times and so is the room service. You have to wait till eternity. Zero marks for promptness and hospitality.
The breakfast spread was good but the space was a constraint. They entertain outside guests more than the in house ones.
The so called Lalit bakery is outrageous. Tried their butterscotch pastry and it was yuck. The coffee they served was cold and tasteless.
Would like to mention the gate security staff, those people were kind and friendly.
