In olden days a story was told as follows-- " when the river flooded a mother was stranded in one side and could not cross to her daughter's place to help in her childbirth. So she prayed Lord shiva to help her daughhter. Lord Shiva took the mother's guise to help her fully pregnant daughter and helped the baby's birth and all became normal. When the original mother came to her daughter's house, was shocked to see herself in their abode. Great was the leela of Lord shiva who helped his devotee unflinching love. The Shivji is called Thaayumaanavar means "the persona who becomes mother too". The temple is more than 2000 years old, beautiful, soul rendering atmosphere and excellent panoramic ambience, the view of entire city from hllltop, it's age old paintings, sculptures etc. The mothers to-be and all those who wish to have normal comfortable child birth pray the almighty Thayumanavar and Devi Parvathi here with one seer plantain ( one whole banana bunch from tip to toe from the banana tree). Abhishekam and aaradana is unique and soul touching. If you step further upwards in stairs you will reach Uchi Pillaiyar Koil of Tiruchirapalli.
Thayumanaswamy Sivan Temple is situated in the Rock fort Uchi Pillaiyar Koil in Tiruchirappalli. We have to climb around 300 steps. Lord Siva as per the prayer of his devotee went to her daughter's house and helped hee during the delivery period as her mother in disguise. Hence called Thayumanavar. Lord Siva is with Parvathi as Mattuvar kuzhali Ammaiyar is giving dharshan to devotees. This temple is more than 2000 years old. Very well maintained. It is accessible by vehicles. Private parking available nearby. The temple is in the midst of the city in a busy area. Hence always crowded. To see the temple you ha e to use the steps only. After seeing the Thayumanavar we can go to the Uchi Pillaiyar temple by climbing another 150 steps There apart from Uchi Pillaiyar dharshan you can see the beautiful view of the city and other places. Must visit place and from this place we can see the entire trichirapalli view. You can point Srirangam and lot more. It's a divine place where Lord Siva is called as Thayumanavar. Those who need kid or normal delivery you can visit this temple. Once completed you have to donate complete banana thaar which is available in temple premises. Here paintings are really good and lingam is fourth largest in our country in terms of size. Yesterday i went and its really a goosebump moment for me.

The Thayumanavar Temple is a temple situated in the Rockfort complex (Malaikottai mlaikkoottttai) in the city of Tiruchirappalli, India. Shiva is worshiped as Thayumanavar, and is represented by the lingam and his consort Parvati is depicted as Mattuvar Kuzhalammai. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. According to Hindu legend, a pregnant woman named Rathnavathi was an ardent devotee of Shiva. While nearing labor, she requested her mother to come over. Her mom could not reach on account of heavy floods in river Cauvery. As delivery time came closer, Rathnavathi prayed to Shiva. Shiva, moved by the devotion of Rathnavathi, took the form of Rathnavathi's mother and helped with her smooth delivery. After the delivery, Shiva vanished and Rathnavathi's mother arrived later. The family came to know that it was Shiva who attended to the delivery. Henceforth, Shiva in the temple came to be known as Thayumanaswamy, meaning the Lord who acted like a Mother. The temple obtained the name from the presiding deity, Thayumanaswamy. Shiva disguised himself as a mother for a pregnant lady, leading to the name Thayumanavar, meaning the one who became a mother.
