Thanjavur Big Temple - Featured Reviews (5278)
Amazing temple, said to be third tallest in India. One has to go there to really appreciate what has been created by our ancestors. We had taken a guide for 800Rs, he explained properly but was in a bit of hurry. Hardly 30-40 people were present there when we visited. Maybe TN govt needs to do more to promote this place. The temple authorities have put coir mat (maybe to prevent visitors feet from hot stone flooring). It was wet too but actually felt disgusting/ unclean to walk on it - some places yellow water was oozing out.
We choose to revisit during the Christmas vacation time.
But there was a huge crowd and had a waiting period of more than 3+ hours
So we decided to take a round the temple. Sat and witnessed one of the blissful sunset. Few spots were amazing
And saw the crazy of people to witness the lizard in the tree as a good sign and luck as the history says.
Would like to repay visit peaceful one more time peaceful sometime soon and capture it well
This temple will always be my favourite place to be awestruck by the magnificent architecture and carvings on the stone. All you do is sit down and look at the beautiful planning and design of the temple.
Also called as Brihadeeshwara Temple located in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. It has one of the biggest Shiva lingas of the country. Also there is a big statue of Nandi made ina single rock about 17 ft long and 14 ft high at the entrance. Almost entire temple structure is made out of granite. This temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu. I would recommend you to go in the night time where you will get to see the real beauty of this temple..
Delayed plans, so visited during the dark. But temple was equally memerizing at night.
Visited during sunday and it was crowd free. Only 40-50 people were there at a time and mostly tourists.
Those who are maintaining the temple are doing a great job. No trash anywhere
And the temple lighting is excellent
Toilets are free and its decent.
Definitely worth visiting. Photos doesn't do justice at all. You got to see this in person.
The temple has inscriptions at the entrance and all over the side walls.
A couple of souvenier shops are present inside
Has chappal stand and charges Rs3 a pair. Cloak room is also there, but in this temple they do allow our bags and mobile phones inside.
Parking is present right in front of the temple and is chargeable
Very beautiful experience of divine temple and architectural marvel.
Better time to visit is Evening time 4pm because at morning , the scorching sun heats up the granite but under temple it is so cool.
Architectural Grandeur:
The temple's architectural splendor is nothing short of breathtaking.
The Vimana stands at 66 meters, making it one of the tallest in South India. The stone capstone on top of the tower weighs an astounding 80 tons, a testament to the engineering genius of its creators.
Another big thing is The Nandi in front of big temple is second largest in india and which is made up of completely one rock.
The mathematical brilliance behind the temple's proportions, aligning perfectly with celestial bodies, showcases the advanced knowledge of astronomy possessed by its creators.
The sanctum sanctorum poseses the divine lingam, emanating an energy that envelops all who enter. The temple's design, aligned meticulously with cosmic energies.
In the heart of Tanjavur, the Breehadeeswara Temple stands tall as not just a structure of stone, but a living embodiment of centuries of culture, devotion, and architectural brilliance.
I recently had the incredible opportunity to visit the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, also known as the Thanjavur Big Temple, and it left an indelible mark on my mind. This awe-inspiring monument is a testament to the architectural and artistic brilliance of the Chola dynasty and is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Tamil Nadu, India.
The most striking feature of the Brihadeeswarar Temple is its colossal vimana (temple tower) that seems to touch the sky. It is one of the tallest temple towers globally and immediately captures your attention. The temple is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture, with intricate carvings, symmetrical design, and a perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality.
Stepping into the temple premises is like stepping back in time to the glorious days of the Chola dynasty. This temple, constructed by King Rajaraja I in the 11th century, holds immense historical and cultural significance. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its walls are adorned with stunning frescoes and detailed stone carvings that narrate stories from Hindu mythology and provide insights into life during that era.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the grandeur and serenity of the inner sanctum leave you in a state of spiritual awe. The massive Shiva Lingam within is among the largest in India. Whether you are a devout pilgrim or just someone seeking a moment of contemplation, the temple's atmosphere is deeply spiritual and calming.
What's remarkable about the Brihadeeswarar Temple is that it is not just a historical relic; it's a living legacy. Daily rituals and ceremonies continue to be performed here, and the temple plays a vital role in preserving and promoting classical arts and culture, including dance and music.
The temple authorities have done a commendable job of maintaining the site and ensuring a pleasant visitor experience. The premises are clean, well-maintained, and offer informative displays that help you understand the historical and architectural significance of the temple.
The Brihadeeswarar Temple is not just a monument; it's a symbol of human ingenuity, devotion, and a living piece of history. My visit left me in absolute awe of the Chola dynasty's legacy and the enduring power of spirituality. If you find yourself in Tamil Nadu, the Thanjavur Big Temple is a destination that you cannot afford to miss. It's a journey through time, culture, and spirituality that will leave you humbled and inspired.
