Its a single stone built wonder by the great king Raja Raja Cholan. Worth visiting. Atmosphere is too good. In weekends/holidays its crowded. But it's manageable. Parking is available opposite to the temple. Both 2&4 wheels. 10 rs for 4 wheels. Inside there is a place for chappals on chargeable. Items sold near there are costly.
Historical stories of Raja Raja cholan......he built the temple.....I enjoyed a lot to visit this temple.....nandhi was so big.....and lingha also very big....... climate is very hot
Everyone must visit this temple once in their life. Divine experience with chola dynasty and their skills.i visit this temple second time but in night time it gives an unique experience than the previous one. Stunned with this beautiful views.

So my experience, my family loved it..I like it too but personally I think it is a bit overrated (I've been here before). They are so many more older and very powerful temples around Kumbakonam and Thanjavur and I would suggest to find and visit them. Thanjai periya kovil is architecturally and historical a must visit place but that's about it. If you've never visited, please do. But try to find other, not so known but famous temples around. A little research is must. My suggestions, suryan Kovil, thirukodikaval, patteswaram, kathiramangalam vana durgai, ask around, you'll find more.
Really an amazing temple structure. Walked around and enjoyed the visit. Better time to visit is evening. Well maintained and paid car parking area is available.
Tanjore Great Temple is so grandly built that not only the Tamils but all the people of the world will be in awe of it
