Ten Pillar - Monument in Madurai - Madurai, India

When you visit Madurai, take a chance to visit the Pathu thoon theru (10 pillars street). It is behind the Tirumalai Nayakar palace. When you reach there, you get to see the stretch of 10 pillars amidst the textile shops. It is one of the historical monuments in Madurai. These pillars are part of the Palace which is called as Renga vilasam (formerly known as Swarka vilasam). Here lived Muthiyalu Nayakar - the brother of the King Thirumalai Nayakar. These pillars are now the only remaining structures of the Renga vilasam.

Each pillars is 12 metres (40 ft.) high and 1.20 metres (4 ft.) in girth. The locals refer to it as the Ten Pillar Lane.It appears that King Tirumalai Nayak had two palaces, 'Swarga Vilasam', comprising of the main palace which was recently renovated and `Renga Vilasam', which belonged to his brother, Muthialu Nayak.
