Tana and Riri were twin sisters, their mother's name was Sharmishtha, who was the granddaughter of Narsingh Mehta, a devotee poet of Junagadh. who were accomplished singers and She was the only person who could help Tansen to provide relief to Tansen's burning by singing Raga Malhar. When they were asked to sing in Akbar's court, they refused There was a possibility of a war-like situation in their city if they did not accept the proposal of the court. Hence, instead of going to the court and singing, he chose to commit suicide by drowning in a well. Later, when Akbar came to know about this, he apologized to his father.

When Tansen revealed this secret to Akbar, his sons overheared him, and reached the city to find the sisters. Chanced upon by the city folks, the strangers were killed. When the Mughal army came marching to capture the sister, they chose to give up their life rather than allow their city to face the wrath. The city never forgot the sacrifice of Tana-Riri, and continues to honour their memory with an annual music festival.
