This is very next to Main temple in Hampi. You can climb with a moderate trek but people above 40's little difficult for them as there is no proper path or way to climb. There is also a small temple on top of this hill. Sunrise and view from peak is mesmerising. If you're really meditating person, I think you're going to have very great time.
This is a must visit place in Hampi. Doesn't matter you go for a sunrise or a sunset. But views are breathtaking. Unfortunately during our visit it was very cold and foggy so we couldn't watch the sunrise. But after few hours the sun was already up by 9am. We visited at 5:30 the starting point for trek and reached about 30 min on the top of the hill. Note: whenever you are travelling here make sure you have footwear with nice grips as you have to climb and get down on slippery rocks. Dont bring anything to eat or avoid bags as there are lots of monkey who seems to be nowhere but come our suddenly you open a bag or anything to eat. Best view is at the top of the hill and on the roof top of the temple. You can have 360 degree view of hampi. You can see the market, virupaksh temple, tungabhadra river, achutaraya temple etc. Also we wanted to visit for sunset but it rained that day so the plan got flopped again. All the bes to you but. I have seen picture from other people and they are marvelous.
I have visited this point twice and it is totally worth climbing. The view is amazing. Sunrise and sunset both looks beautiful from the top of the hill. It is easy to reach on the top of the hill, not difficult at all. You can see the main Virupaksha Temple from the top. You can see almost all of Hampi from the top. It is so peaceful that you can just sit there for hours and enjoy the view.
It's a great experience and must visit while ur in the city... It's so foggy and very peaceful
It's a delightful experience trekking uphill Matanga Hill, hailed as the highest peak in all of Hampi, it will give a birds eye view of Hampi. From Virupaksha -- hampi bazaar -- monolithic bull statue -- anjanadri -- vittala temple -- achutha devaraya temple to the lotus Mahal etcetera places. There is a Narashimha swamy temple at the apex of the hill. Being known for sunrise and sunset, it's suggested if anyone is visiting hampi for the first time, better start off the first day trekking this hill to get an idea of all the places to visit in hampi. Suggested timing 5:30 AM, one cannot miss the sunrise . There is one other sunrise point (Malyawanta Paravata) but trust me this just unbeatable w.r.t to that.
My experience at the Matanga hill was quite dangerous. I came to Hampi on 15/11/2021 with my family. The next day in the early morning at 5:00am I left from Sandhya guest house(near Virupaksha temple) towards Matanga hills (through Bazaar street). 1)SAFE AND EASY ROUTE: Follow the straight route from Virupaksha Temple towards hills that are opposite to the temple and visible( it's called Bazaar street) for 1km, then steps are visible through an embankment follow them(DONT TURN RIGHT NEAR THE DEAD END).... now after 200m you can see the Achutraya temple ruins, the pathway bends itself to the right and takes you to the hill top... It's easy and safer route(10 mins hardly). 2) Cave route: I GOT TRAPPED I was alone and took right near the dead end of bazar street from the hill front and followed it as it was written by someone saying "way to hill". I just had my phone as torch and Google Map was ON. I went through the cave opening(@5:30am) and got lost. Imagine if there was a heavy rain( cause there was minute opening on to top), if bats were there, or what if a bear or any other wild animal was hiding. It was impossible to go ahead after 200m in the cave. Then I took the return route, but there were many passages to my left, which confused me, and I was damn horrified in the dark (I just wanted to return). Was locked there for 20 damn minutes, then with the help of compass in my phone visualised for a minute and prayed God, and just got off through a passage which was small and covered with bushes. Please don't try this route alone in the early morning (AFTER ENTERING THE CAVE---TAKE LEFT AND KEEP SRRAIGHT, NOT THE RIGHT). i was a lot happy witnessing the sun shine on my face. Enjoyed the bird view of Hampi. It's worth visiting this place.
The view is simply breathtaking... To reach the top one needs to trek for half an hour. The trek is simple throughout except near the top. From the top, the whole Hampi can be seen. Try to visit during sunset for the best view. Parking is available for the spot.
There is something about this place.. after trekking high up the hill you are greeted with 360 degree birds eye view of Hampi. This is the best point for sunrise and sunset. One must get the thrill of hiking this hill if in Hampi..
