St. Diogo, patron of Guirim and Sangolda villages, lends his name to a church steeped in history. Established in 1604 by Fr. Miguel de S. Boaventura and supported by Diogo Lobo, the Captain of Bardez, and Fr. Joao de S. Mathias, the church boasts distinctive features. The main altar honors St. Diogo, flanked by St. Anthony of Padua and St. Francis of Assisi. Five ornate altars grace the nave, with one dedicated to Infant Jesus and another to Our Lady of Rosary. The church's three bells became a point of contention, with Sangolda cleverly claiming two by working through the night, etching a tale into the shared history of the two villages.
It is one of the most well-kept Goan churches. I was able to spend more time in the church because of the nice quiet atmosphere. Unfortunately, I could not get inside.
Huge Church, which looks majestic be it day or night with ample space around the Church. It has its own huge graveyard close to it. There is also space to park your 2 & 4 wheeler vehicles outside. Coming to the Church, it is pretty old but the exterior building takes your breath away. It has old style Altar and it's decorations, furnishings and statues all reflect old charm - keeping alive the beauty whilst making you nostalgic about the good ol' times.
Scenic, beautiful and proper, narrow by-lanes lead to a beautiful Italian church. The scene looks straight out of a well shot movie. The coconut and palm trees on side add to the look.
The well kept premises. The serene surroundings. I wish they could have kept a sanctuary open for meditation.
More than 4 centuries after it's construction, this Church stands as a monument to the European construction standards. The white colour structure looks beautiful from a distance when the sky turns murky and when it starts raining. Though I haven't attended a mass here, I believe that the experience inside would be great as much as it seems from the outside
