Shiva as Navaneetheswarar in Sikkil is in the form of Linga. Purana has it that this linga was originally sculpted by Sage Vasishta out of butter (navaneetha) that came from the milk of divine cow Patti (daughter of Kamadhenu). However, this temple became more famous due to Lord Muruga aka Singaravelavar. Here Muruga was given the powerful Vel (divine spear) by His mother Parvathi. It is believed that all the problems will be removed by this Lord if one prays to Him sincerely with all his heart. There are other shrines too here for a beautiful Ganesha and Maha Vishnu. Navaneetheswarar sanctum is at a higher level than other shrines. Temple is quite ancient (roughly 1300 years old) and has some exquisite sculptures.
