Vinukonda is a historical town and Mandal head quarters in Guntur district, located at a distance of 85 kms from Guntur on Guntur - Kurnool road. Known as Vishnu Kundinagara or Vishnu Kundinapura, was supposed to be the Capital city of the Vishnukundins in 4th century A.D. It was under the control of the Reddys of Kondaveedu and then the Gajapatis of Orissa in 14th - 15th centuries A.D. Sri Krishnadevaraya, the mighty emperor of the Vijayanagara empire captured the hill fort at Vinukonda alongwith Kondaveedu and Bellamkonda in 1516 A.D. In 1579 A.D. it came into the hands of the Qutb Shahis of Golconda. The British took it in 18th century and built some structures there. Also known as Srutaparvata Durgam (Vinukonda), it has the Ramayana connection. Rama and Laxmana came to this place in search of Sita, who was abducted by Ravana. Rama and Lakshmana saw Jatayu bird in pitiable condition in a pool of blood with her wings cut. It narrated how Ravana took away Sita and died on the spot. So the place was called as Vinnakonda or Vinukonda i.e. the spot where Rama heard the news about Sita and her abduction by Ravana. There is a temple of Ramalingeswara in which the Linga was installed by Rama according to a legend. At the foot of the Vinukonda hill lies the temple dedicated to Narasimha Swamy, the Man-Lion incarnation of Vishnu, built during the Reddy and Vijayanagara periods. It is believed that the 16 pillared Mandapa was built by Anavema Reddy and later on a garbhagriha and arthamandapa were added during the Vijayangara period. The architecture of the temple is simple with plain walls. The pillars in the mandapa are erected on a simple upapeetha. Towards the left is a masjid built in Qutb Shahi Style during the 16th century A.D.
