There is an old temple of Lord Krishna that is highly recommended to visit. It is located near the beach. The temple is open until 12:00 noon, closes temporarily, and reopens at 5:30 PM until 8:00 PM. Please note that the temple strictly adheres to its closing time. Visitors are required to follow the dress code. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that the Lord is adorned in different avatars every day.

The temple was good. You need to go without shirt. No entry fees were collected. Morning time is good to visit.

The Janardhana Temple in Varkala, Kerala, is believed to be built by Devas but fell into disrepair and was later rebuilt by a Pandya king. It's an ancient temple with a 2000-year history situated on a steep hill at the entrance of Beach Road. The temple showcases Kerala's art and architecture with a circular 'Sanctum sanctorum' topped by a copper dome, a rectangular mandapam featuring wooden carvings of navagrahas, and a copper-clad roof. The chief priest, a Tulu Brahmin, comes from outside the region. Sub-deities include Ganapati, Shasta, Anantha (Nagam) Shiva, Chandikesha, and Hanuman. Visitors must adhere to dress codes, and it's noteworthy that the Lord is adorned in different avatars daily, making the temple a major pilgrimage center with a captivating history and spiritual ambiance.

Beautiful ancient Hindu temple of Lord Janardan aka Vishnu. The place is on cliff top and a bit secluded but serene.

Sri Janardanaswamy Temple was such an incredible experience. We have been in Varkala for a week or so and wanted to visit as many temples as possible. Considering that I have been on crutches and this particular temple is one for healing we were thankful to be able to go in. We would have loved the opportunity to speak with someone and have them explain to us all of the customs and traditions ( we felt like we ere doing everything wrong - or at least not right). There was an incredibly intense energy within the temple complex.Which we carried with us throughout the day. There are many different myths, beliefs, and legends regarding this temple... We were so grateful to have been allowed to come. Thank you! -**2000 year old temple** - Janardhana Swami is a form of Lord Vishnu - First legend - Long ago, Brahma came to Earth to perform a yaga (fire sacrifice) in what is now Varkala. He was so absorbed in making Yaga that he forgot his creative work. Vishnu came to Varkala in the form of a very old man to remind Brahma of this. Brahmin's assistants welcomed the old man and gave him food. But nothing he ate could satisfy his hunger. Brahma's assistants told him about this. Brahma could understand that his guest was Vishnu himself. He immediately went to Lord Vishnu and found him about to eat Abhojanam. Brahma prevented Vishnu from eating it and said, "If he eats it, the final deluge will swallow up this world." Vishnu asked Brahma to stop Yaga and resume the work of creation. He also showed Vishvarpa. After this, one day the saints Narada and Vishnu were walking over Varkala. Lord Brahma who came there saluted Lord Vishnu. The nine Prajapatis, who had only seen Narada, laughed at him because they thought he was saluting his son Narada. Brahma corrected them and they regretted their sinful deeds. Brahma told them that Narada would show them the proper place to pray for their salvation. The sage Narada threw the varkala (deer skin) he was wearing towards the earth. It fell into present-day Varkala. The Prajapatis wanted a pond to atone for their sins. Sage Narada made a request to Lord Vishnu, and Lord Vishnu created a pond there using his chakra (wheel). The Prajapatis performed tapas there and were forgiven of their sins. The "gods" are believed to have built a temple of Vishnu there and worshiped Janardana. - 2nd legend As per the legends, the temple of Janardhana Swamy was built by devas but the temple was dilapidated by the ravages of time. It was later built by Pandaya King. It is believed that he was affected by an evil spirit. He went on a pilgrimage to get rid of the negative effects of the evil spirit. He came across a place named Varkala where he saw the remnants of this dilapidated temple by the side of the sea. He prayed to god and promised that he would reconstruct this temple. The next day in his dream he was asked to go to the sea and stand near the temple. There he will see a huge number of flowers floating in the sea. If he starts searching there he would get an idol. He did the same which was told to him in the dream and found an idol. The present Janardhana Swamy Temple is said to have been recovered by him. He built the temple and took great care of its maintenance.

Sri Janardanaswamy Temple at Varkala is on top of small hillock. More than 1000 year temple of Lord Vishnu. Sivan temple is adjacent. Very well built and maintained temple. Big Nagalinga flower tree is in front of the temple. Big temple tank at the foot hill.
