A very old, temple in runs but a clean one , which is in the kumbakonam, a very big temple with a pond inside the temple and the pond is between the nandi and the shiva, feature I have never seen in any of the other temples . A unique architecture of dome shaped main hall, and a atrium with a more traditional setup. It has a specific god called gaja samhara Siva, who actually got into a form of a baby to kill the elephant from inside out. It seems to be a very powerful temple, but even lacks some of the lightings, which we need to get it there. I don't blame the government, the patrons we need to make it work
A temple with great architecture but need renovation.
It is one of the astaveerata thalam. And have a very old history. This temple is located on the mayiladuthurai to tiruvarur main road, nearly 10 kms from mayiladuthurai.
Very pleasant place. One of the famous 8 veeratta stalam, you see trees planted for your zodiac sign
What a Temple. A grandeur in its own class. Ancient temple with a massive temple pond bang in front of moolasthanam. A must visit temple which is situated in a isolated village. Enough parking.
Has a positive vibe in and around the temple. There is a huge tree to your immediate left...it is considered sacred ( Just a foodie tip, never miss the Kumbakonam degree coffee near the entrance of the temple, The Brahmin uncle's sweet gesture and his morning breakfast made my day)
Vazhuvoor Veeretanam. This is the only Shiva temple where devotees can have the padadarshanam of the Lord. Lord Gaja Samhara Murthi is praised as the Special Lord of the temple. The idol-sculpture is very realistic showing, the tearing of the elephant (Gaja) keeping His feet on its head and wearing its skin. The legend is associated with Dharukavanam and Lord entered elephant stomach and world became dark. As the place eluded (Vazhuvudhal in Tamil) destruction by pralaya floods, the place is called Vazhuvur. The name in scriptures is Tharukavanam.
