Sree Subramanya Swami Temple, Perunna - Hindu temple in Changanassery - Kottayam, India

Perunna Subrahmanya Swami Temple is a Hindu temple located in Changanacherry. The deity of the temple is Subrahmanya Swami (Kartikeya), one of the three sons of Lord Shiva. This is the first temple in Kerala which was opened to all Hindus (irrespective of the caste), before the order of Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma of the Kingdom of Travancore by Mannathu Padmanabhan[citation needed] Hearing this incident Mohandas Gandhi during his first visit to Kerala came to the temple and worshipped the Muruga for days.[citation needed] A grand ceremony and meeting were conducted at the east gate of the temple then. In the temple, the furious form of Subrahmanya Swami is worshipped. The Vel is pointed downwards. Subrahmanya Swamy is worshipped here in the form of Devasenapathi, the supreme general of the holy forces. The deity is in an angry and furious mood as he had just killed Tarakasuran. He is in a very angry mood as he had just killed Tarakasuran. He faces east as seen in most of the temples, and this is the only temple with a furious form. Mahaganapathi, Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva and serpent deities are the other deities. Inscriptions in Vatteshuthu alphabet can be seen at the west gate of the temple. These are believed to be written in the 10th century, during the rule of Kulasekhara Koyiladhikari. Perunna is a holy place with a lot of temples. The deity inside the temple is in a furious mood because he came here after killing the asura (demon). Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva, Lord Ayyappan, Mahaganapathi, Sarpa Deva, Rakshasa are other deities in this temple. Tuesday is an important day in the Temple. The pooja (rituals) are done by Nambudiri Brahmin priests. December-January are time of festival at the Temple.

Never heard of this temple before. We came to know about this temple on the last day of our travel in changanassery. We kept our base as changanassery to visit the divya desams there. On the last day we had some spare time, before we boarded the train in the night. The hotel staff told us about this temple and how it can be reached by walk itself from the hotel. We didn't want to waste our time in the hotel, so in the evening we went out for a walk to the temple. The biggest problem in our kerala trip was the communication, hence we were left wondering when we saw this temple. We didnt know the history of the temple, we didnt know that it was an ancient temple, and how the maharaja opened it up for the public for darshan, and how mahatama Gandhi came here to offer his worship. Read all that now. Feel so happy and thankful that i had indeed visited an ancient and wonderful temple, with rich history. But when we visited the temple, one thing took me by surprise, and due to communication could not ask anyone why it was like that. The point that took me by surprise was the way the SPEAR of Lord Muruga is pointed down. For a guy from tamil nadu, this was a total surprise and shock, since we always have seen the SPEAR always up and close to his face. We were a bit early to the temple in the evening i believe, and they were very slow in doing things in this temple. After quiet sometime, we did have a wonderful darshan of Lord muruga. Definitely a very good temple to visit.

The diety is so powerful and the results of rituals are 100%. But nowadays the temple officials are just changing the normal orders and working like only for money, making the devotees so irritating.
