The Budha statue is placed at Budha Junction in front of Sree Krishna Swamy Temple Mavelikara. The statue was excavated accidentally from a paddy field near Kandiyoor Mahadeva Temple in the early 1900s The image of budha is in yogasana posture on a pedastal and is about 4 feet in height. This is perhaps the largest of the Buddha images discovered from various parts of Kerala.This has been declared as a protected monument in 1966 by the Department of Archeology, Kerala. The studies on this image reveals that it belongs to the 9th century. It is assumed that the erstwhile Onattukara was a centre of Buddhism.Budhism spread far and wide to the neighbouring countries and flourished there. But it became extinct in the land of its origin which might have been due to the upsurgence of Hinduism under the guidance of Sree Sankaracharya. However the images of Budha found out from the various part of Kerala reveals that they have been uprooted, destroyed and sunk in the ponds and rivers. The monument is well protected and maintained. The local people also help very much to preserve the image of Budha who was the apostle of love and kindness.

Mavelikkara is one of the rare places in Kerala where one can find the statue of the Buddha in seated position back to 9thcentury A.D. Now this place is also a worshipping centre. This Buddha Image is about 3 feet height including the pedestal upon which it is seated. Really excited to see a budha statue at kerala.
