Southern Basil - Restaurant in Panaji - North Goa, India

Have visited this earlier . Initially the food tasted much more flavourful and the restaurant was always quite full However things seems to have changed a lot. We ordered chicken ghee roast which was served with appam. The dish was pretty average in taste Next we ordered was chicken biryani, the rice of which I expected to nice and fluffy but it was sort of dry in taste . Nothing interesting in here Overall a very average experience

Chicken 65 and chicken chukka went well for starters. The Mutton Rogan Josh and Chicken Ghee roast went so well with the Paratha and Appam! Cooked very well! Recommended!! Loved the Chicken Biryani aswell! Good ambience and service!

Southern Basil ticked many boxes for the south Indian in us ! Decor , music , ambience, courteous staff and authentic south indian food taste ! The perfect padams to start with , Kari pillai kara mushroom ( a pepper cumin stir fried mushroom) for starters , idiyappam with stew , onion uttapam, thayir sadam ( curd rice ), katrikai kara kozmbu ( brinjal stuffed with tamarind and spices with gravy ). Had to finish off on a sweet note with a pineapple kesari (pineapple sheera) And ofcourse what's more south indian than a filter coffee ! To find an authentic veg south indian in Goa is difficult but Southern Basil has now made it easy ! The staff have been one of the best I've seen so far.

Southern Basil is the new restaurant of the erstwhile Hotel Fidalgo. Post COVID Fidalgo is being managed by new management and probably Southern Basil is one of their fresh offering to the city of Panaji. I visited Southern Basil for dinner. The place is a landmark on its own and hence finding it was no challenge. I was able to park my car very near to the restaurant, though during lunch time it may be a little challenge. The entry to the restaurant is from inside the main lobby of the hotel. As I entered I noticed that all the waiters and waitresses were wearing traditional South Indian costume. Even the decor gives you a touch of South India. I was guided by one of the Waitresses to a comfortable table. The main menu and drinks menu was provided to me quite promptly. Though I did not wanted to each much for the dinner I thought that soup can be a good choice on a rainy night. I asked for Seafood Charu (probably charu is soup in one of the southern languages). The Charu was served along with two pieces of papad. I really liked the soup. However one of the papad that was served had lots of oil in it. This was disappointing as while I asked for a replacement I didn't got the replacement though spending around an hour. For the main course I ordered Chicken Chukka and appam. I found both to my satisfaction. The place has a well stocked bar as well. My overall experience was good with the restaurant and I can recommend it for tourists as well as locals. It can be conveniently reached by people of all ages. I had my sweet dish at Aunty Maria, its a coffee shop managed by the hotel in the same property. I had ordered for butter scotch pastry. Authentic south Indian cuisine ,with pleasent ambience , delicious food , but a bit on the expensive side ! In frame: Chicken 65 : 430/- Marinated deep fried chicken , soft and spicy , topped with curry leaves , coconut shreds was a Chicken chettinad : 430/- Chettinad in genaral is my favourite , but the taste here did not satisfy my tastebuds ! Mutton Kara sukkha : 600/- We actually hesitate to eat mutton outside coz it's quite hard sometimes , but their Kara sukkha was so tender ,soft and melt in mouth that we could not stop but ask for more Prawn biryani : 650/- The taste of the biryani was good but the prawns didn't have enough flavours ! Malabar parota 100/- ( spot on everytime ) Appam 100/- You'll can visit Southern basil to satisfy ur south Indian palate

By far only restraunt in goa serving flavours from 4 different states. If u wanna try different Rajasthani,kerala,UP,Tamilian food then thus restaurant is must try. Loved the food here & ambience

Not sure why this place isn't more popular! Every visit here has been a delight. The servers are so polite and courteous. The food is great. Highly recommend trying the mushroom starter in karipatta paste (forgot the name), chicken chukka, navratna kurma with parota. Their sambar and the chutneys that come along with idli/wadas are delicious too. Filter coffee is just like it should be - strong and piping hot! Overall it's a great place for dining and if you want to try proper south Indian food which is hard to find in Goa.
