The Siddheswara temple is towards the center of Kalgi (Kalagi) town, north of the historic Kalgi Hindu temples group such as Suryanarayana and Kaleshwara temples found near the river here. This temple is east of the historic Jain temple ruins found in Kalgi. Next to the Siddheshwara temple, on the north side, is another major historic ruin of Mallikarjuna temple with beautiful salabhanjikas (wall reliefs of dancers) built in 1163 CE (also called Gonkeshwara temple in Sanskrit inscription, Kannada script). The Siddheswara temple is a large stone temple dedicated to Shiva (it is not partly underwater as some images incorrectly posted to Google maps indicate; that temple is near the Kaleshwar and Narasimha found on the banks of the river). The Siddeshvara temple is also from the Kalyana Chalukya era, pre-12th century. It is a smaller South Indian Dravida architecture temple with aedicules that celebrate North Indian Nagara styles with secular and religious reliefs common in historic Hindu temples. Like other Kalgi temples, Vishnu, Shakti and Vedic deity reliefs are also found here. This temple is home to one of the large stone inscriptions found in Kalgi. During your visit, compare the Hindu art details here with those in other Kalgi temples from the 11th and 12th century.
The present; kalagi" known as "Kaluge" in an ancient inscriptions; is 40 kms away from Kalaburagi. It has a temple complex of Chalukyan period. Kalagi was popularly known then as the garden of temples. Kalagi in the seventh century was a well-developed rich city with a population of more than three lakhs -according to the historians. There are more than 30 monuments in and around the Kalagi village. But it is ignored by Archaeology Department.
