This 4500 years old temple is called Panchganga because water of five rivers Krishna Venna Koyna Savithri and Gayathri confluences here and comes out of a statue of Gaumukh which is considered very sacred by Hindus.
This is 2nd temple in line after Atibaleswar....this temple is about 5 rivers water coming together
The water from 5 rivers- Gayatri, Savitri, Koyna, Krishna & Venna is said to originate from the temple. The water is cold inspite of the hot summer outside.
The Panch Ganga Temple is the most popular temple located in the Temple Complex at Old Mahabaleshwar. Here you can see the five (panch) rivers (ganga) meet at one place and then flow out as a single stream through the mouth of a sculpted stone cow, or 'Gaumukh'. These 5 rivers are the Koyna, Krishna, Venna, Savitri and Gayatri. The water flow is perennial, and this is the miraculous secret of this temple. Two other rivers also said to originate here; the Bhagirathi flows once in 12 years and the Saraswati flows once in 60 years.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and has a beautiful idol of him. Next to him there is a small idol of Lord Ganesh. After paying their respects to the deities all the devotees take a sip of the holy water flowing from the Gaumukh. The water flowing out of the Gaumukh is one of the best I have ever tasted. It is pure, clean, cold and refreshing. Don't forget to bring an empty bottle or two to carry home this holy water for your near and dear ones. Photography is prohibited inside the temple premises.
The Panch Ganga Temple is constructed at the confluence of five rivers, Krishna, Venna, Savitri, Koyna and Gayatri. All the rivers come out from the mouth of a statue of a cow in this temple, thus the place being called Panchganga Mandir.
You should definitely taste water here. I bet you haven't tasted water from anywhere better than here.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and has a beautiful idol of him. The legend behind the temple is closely linked to Savitri's curse on the Trimurtis, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, who flow here as Koyna, Krishna and Venna rivers.
A temple from where 5 rivers originate.
You can drink the water there, it's really cool and pure. One of the rivers flow once in 12 years also originates from this temple.
A 5 minutes walk from here can lead you to Krishnani temple on a cliff from where the view of the valley and a lake is breathtaking
Great culture and history if you try
I thought this was a great place to spend a couple hours. 1st tour the market leading to the temple. The temple itself includes water from the 5 rivers that converge in the area. Spend a little time reading about the long history and then tour the grounds. Nice relaxing couple hours for exploring.
One of the best place in mahabaleshwar .
Nice and serene place. It's called as the origin of 5 rivers Koyna, Savitri, Gayatri, Venna & Krishna. People drink this holy water. There are 5 stone built outlets, from where the water comes from the said rivers. There is a market surrounding this temple selling wooden artifacts, toys and strawberries. Mahabaleshwar temple is also located nearby.
