Shree Kapileswar Temple, Charda - Hindu temple in Charda, Binka - Sonepur, India

The Kapilesvar temple at Charda is a beautiful Shiva temple, one of the best preserved from the 12 to 13th century expansion of this early South Kosala - Odisha site. Charda (Carda) is to the west of Mahanadi river and was in the suburbs of Binka (Binika) - the ancient city and capital mentioned in Odiya and Sanskrit texts, as well as inscriptions, from 4th to 13th century. This site and temple thus has ancient origins. This temple is built on a hill here, allowing majestic views of Odisha scenery around it. This temple illustrates a square pancha-ratha plan architecture, with a mandapa, vestibule and sanctum. The walls, pillars and sanctum doorway have beautiful carvings. The temple follows the geometric ratios found in early Hindu architecture texts, such as the 1:2:4 ratio is its pagas. Though a Shiva temple, the carvings include the complete pantheon of Hindu deities including exquisite artworks of sleeping Vishnu, Surya, and goddesses such as Durga, Ganga, Yamuna, Saptamatrikas and many others. Shaiva artwork here include a beautiful Nataraja, Ardhanarisvara, Kartikeya, Ganesha and legends of Shiva. Thus the temple co-displays artwork from all the major traditions of Hinduism. Outside on the walls are carved scenes of kama-mithuna, musicians, dancers, scenes of daily lives of common people, festivals. This is one of two major temples in Charda, Both are a pleasant and memorable place to visit.

The place is very beautiful. The presiding deity is Lord Kapileswara(Shiva). It is a very old seat of saivism. The temple was built in 9th century. The temple is an exquisite example of early Somavamsi temple art. This temple is a miniature of the Koshaleswar temple at Haradakhol near Sonepur.
