The Kalaram temple is an old Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Rama in the Panchavati area of Nashik City in Maharashtra,India. It is one of the most important Hindu shrines in the city. The temple derives its name from the statue of Lord Rama that is black in colour. The literal translation of Kalaram means black Rama. The sanctum sanctorum also houses the statues of goddess Sita and Lakshman. Thousands of devotees visit the temple every day. The temple was funded by Sardar Rangarao Odhekar. It was built around in 1792. It was said that Sardar Odhekar had a dream that the statue of Rama in black colour was present in the river Godavari. Odhekar took the statues from the river and built the temple. The place where statues were found was named as Ramkund. The main entrance of the temple has Lord Hanuman idol which is black. There is also a very old tree that has Lord Dattatreya's footprint impressions marked on a stone. Temple Story The original temple of Lord Rama was very old, which was estimated to built around the 7th to 11th century Rashtrakuta period. However, the antiquity of the idol of Rama highlights the fact that it was more than 2000 years old. The original temple was destroyed by the Muslim rulers and remained in a ruined state. However, during the first Islamic attack on the temple, the temple idol was thrown into the Godavari river by Brahmans to save the idol of the God. In 1788, the new temple was funded by Sardar Rangarao Odekar when he dreamt about the presence of black idol of Lord Rama in Godavari river. According to the ancient epic of the Ramayana, Lord Rama was sent to exile for fourteen years. After the tenth year of exile, Lord Rama, along with Lakshmana and Sita, stayed for two and a half years on the northern bank of the Godavari near Nashik. This place is known as Panchavati. The temple played an important role in the Dalit movement in India. On 2 March 1930, B. R. Ambedkar staged a protest outside the temple to allow Dalits into the temple.

It been beloved that Odhekar had a dream that the statue of Rama in black colour was in the Godavari River.He carried out expedition of reviving the idol and miraculously got it. Odhekar took the statue from river and built the temple. Odhekar's expedition is an important part of Nashik's history. There is a statue of Sardar Odhekar in the temple. A must visit temple if you're in Nashik and happen to visit Ramkund. Walkable distance from Ramkund and Kapaleshwar temple. The temple architecture is just amazing. Finding parking would be difficult here so make sure you park your vehicles especially four wheeler near at the allotted parking area near ramkund.

Most peacefull temple and have a very great historical importance...I would suggest to visit this place at list once in a month for local and once in year for outsider...every time I visit this temple my mind become so peacefull and positive
