A very nice location just outside of Aligarh
Serene and peaceful environment. Nice place for nature loving people. Voice of birds adds charm to the place.
Shekha Bird Sanctuary (SBS from now on) is a remarkably under rated place. Just a dozen kilometres from Aligarh, it is easily reached. It boasts a rather large marshy wetland, with an interesting perimeter walk of around 3 km, for a large part bordering the wetland on one side. If you take a clockwise walk then you cannot but notice a watery forest which looks remarkably like the mangroves found in Kolkata and Goa; but can surprisingly rival them. But the best part are the water birds, well around a 6-700 at least. They are a mix of the Siberian goose with its pink bill; the majestic white stork often craning it's long neck which ends in a yellowish beak; close by you'll notice its smaller storkish cousin with a black neck, beak and black stockinged legs, black-headed Ibis; there'll be large crow coloured birds, with the larger of the two having a snakey neck called Oriental Darter (& locally the snake bird), and the smaller Little Cormorant; the Egrets too come in two flavours: an all white larger one with a yellow beak referred to as the Great Egret, while Little Egret is smaller with a black beak and plume on the rear in some cases. Other birds easily spotted are the small ducks like the green-winged teal, Eurasian Wigeon, the rust headed Little Grebe, common Merganser and the Eurasian Cohoot. Don't forget to take a pair of binoculars and a camera with some zoom. Check out the pictures...
This place makes us feel closer to the nature. A protected forest area for the conservation of black bucks and some other species, present near Jalali village. The main area is a dense forest which has many types of trees. When we visited we saw a group of deer, does and fawns. Must visit place for nature lovers, there is no entry fee. You can easily reach it by both public transport and private transport.
We visited Shekha Jheel during the month of September when we found only few birds. However, the local guide told us that the best time period to visit the Shekha Jheel is during the months of October till March. It was a calm and serene place with slides for children, fresh drinking water from submersible pump and aerial view of the place from a tower.
good place if u wanna enjoy like trip with your family...nice experience
It was just nice experience. As there was not much to do. Just saw a bird or two which we can see in daily basis. There are not any unique or new birds that we have not seen. The place is also not that much well maintained. There was a fees of 10 rupees as entry fees. You can go there by your own vehicle as there is now a automobile stand available which is privately owned and also charged 10 rs for my bike. Dont know about the car price. By tge way it was a nice experience so if you want to spend some alone time or just be at a quite place then this place might come in handy.
