Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay (also spelt as Sarat Chandra Chatterjee and Saratchandra Chatterji; 15 September 1876 - 16 January 1938), was a Bengali novelist and short story writer of the early 20th century. He generally wrote about the lives of Bengali family and socity in cities and villages. However, his keen powers of observation, great sympathy for fellow human beings, a deep understanding of human psychology (including the "ways and thoughts and languages of women and children"), an easy and natural writing style, and freedom from political biases and social prejudices enable his writing to transcend barriers and appeal to all Indians.[3] He remains the most popular, translated, and adapted Indian author of all time. Sarat Chandra primarily wrote novels, novellas, and stories. In 1903, his first printed work, Mandir, was published. His first novel, Bardidi, was serialized in the Bharati magazine and made him famous. He also wrote essays, which were anthologized in Narir Mulya (1923) and Svadesh O Sahitya (1932). One of Bengal's most prolific and popular novelists, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, was born on September 15, 1876, in Hooghly, Bengal Presidency, India. He was the child of Motilal Chattopadhyay and Bhubanmohini. He engaged himself in writing at a tender age. His earliest stories, Korel and Kashinath, are widely read even today.
This is a museum relating to Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's life. Small two roomed museum with a small lawn cum garden cum park in the front all of which are satisfactorily maintained and neat and clean. Various stages of life of the great writer is depicted by small clay models. There are also some real photographs and hand written documents / letters of Chattopadhyay exhibited here. Overall a good place to gain some insight about the life of the great Novelist. The place is easily accessible from Bandel Railway station by Auto / Toto and takes around 10/15 minutes.
Tourism dept of our state government needs more steps to redevelope this ancestral house of iconic novelist Sarat Chandra Bose !!!!!
It was good to visit such an legendary's birth place. The Smriti Mandir is open for all but is closed on specific days. The Library was closed when I visited there, so nothing else was to see. The only place we could visit was the birth place of the legend. It was again open for all but was not well maintained at all.
Beautiful place for literature & history lovers person.
Very Good Experience In Weekend Tour Planing.
Birthplace of the great writer Saratchandra Chattopadhyay near Bandel Junction. Their is a school, seminar hall, some old temples, a playground etc near the house of the writer.
Anyone coming to Bandel for sightseeing should keep this place itinerary if time permits because its the memorial cum birthplace of "One of the greatest bengali literary icons Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay." Entering from Bandel town via personal vehicle might need some guidance from locals, as the place is not easy to find just through google map currently. However there are E-rickshaws available to & for the place from main town. The place is quite, peaceful, clean & the premise as well as interior is well maintained. A modest restroom is also available in the premise. Sarat babu's life history is depicted via clay models which are cute and will definitely interest everyone include children. Some of his manuscripts (no idea original or not), paper cuttings as well as some b/w photos of that era are also on display along with his personal belongings. All in all a good, educative place for anyone interested in Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay!!
