Shakuntala Restaurant - Featured Reviews (200)
Recently during my visit to Bolpur, Shantinekatan, I came across this amazing restaurant that serves Authentic Bengali food with a menu that is enough to satisfy all your cravings.
Situated just adjacent or the back of the famous Sonajhuri Khowai Haat, Shakuntala Restaurant is a part of the Shakuntala Village Resort and has its own serenity and depicts the tribal culture.
Though the Restaurant is a part of the Resort yet it is open to the outside visitors also.
The ambience of the place is alluring as you would find greenery , wood made furniture with aroma of nature, mud pots , jhuri(basket) as light hangings and lanterns etc for decorations, giving you a feel of purity that will connect you to the vibes of freshness and help you relax.
The prices of the food are very minimal and they have a very short menu which is dynamic in nature. They serve the food on mud thali upon which there is a layer of Padda pata that makes it look more stunning and presentable.
With such amazing vibes and the aroma of the place, we ended up ordering almost everything on the menu.
The mandatory thali which they offer is the veg thali (170/-) per person, Katla Mach 2 pcs(80/-) and Ilish mach 2 pcs(200/-).
They also had kochi pathar mangso , murgrir mangso, katla mach and pomfret too but by the time we ordered the food the timings of further ordering were already over.
*The restaurant serves Breakfast and Lunch only with Timings (8am- 10am) (12pm-3pm) depending on their availablity of the food as they like to serve fresh mouth watering food only.
* Pocket friendly costing (Rs 600-700/-) for 2 person.
* The restaurant works on a prepaid system. You need to select the item and pay for the food in advance. You will be issued a reference slip which you will give to the waiter who will come to ask for your order and he will get your order processed accordingly.
*Visit at the time when the restaurant starts serving the variety they serve.
*Open to all the visitors either staying in the hotel or the ones came to explore.
*As the Restaurant has two kitchens one is for the Authentic Bengali food other is for Chinese etc, make sure you choose the right one.
*This place is must visit for people who loves to enjoy the tribal culture , observe the Sonajhuri Khowai Haat view with some baul gaan (tradiotional song) and some really mouthwatering food.
This restaurant is under the same roof of the sakuntala resort. But they allow outsiders too to have lunch at the restaurant. Food quality is very good. Veg thali is complementary for Rs 170/- and then you can add on chicken, mutton or fish on your choice with extra price. 2 pc chicken curry for 120/- and 2 pc mutton curry for 200/- . Services is good, unlimited rice and veg items included in thali. One of the best parts was they serve in pdm paataa which looks really great.
We visited in weekend, opted to sit in AC section which is in ground floor and astheticaly well decorated.
We ordered veg thali and mutton .
Food was served on brass plate and lotus leave.
Due to crowd the waiting time and serving time was almost 45 mins.
Individually the food was okay however if I compare authentice bengali food of this joint with few other renowned joints in Shantiniketan I would deduct few stars here in terms of taste and service.
Recently I've visited Shakuntala restaurant in Shantiniketan. I've ordered one chicken thali. I found all veg items were below average, especially aluposto, mugerdal and sukto not upto the mark taste wise. I'll recommend you to take care of it next time.
The restaurant has excellent food. Good is nothing like regular restaurants. It's more like homely food. Veg thali is very tasty and wholesome. Atmosphere is pleasant. It's located in Sonajhuri Haat itself.
Service was excellent despite the crowd (on weekends).
Excellent place for families.
Nice ambiance,we had ordered the veg thali and prawn curry. at first they told us that was not available but then their manager came and he sort of manage to get the prawn.other items were good but prawn curry was not tasty at all and not fresh.
This restaurant thrives just because of its location. Smack bang in the middle of the tribal flea market in Sonajhuri, it attracts tourists in hordes who shop incessantly and then need to rest and feed themselves.
The restaurant also entices people with its decor.
The toilets were absolutely filthy- not worthy of human use. Smelly and unclean and the sinks were disgusting too.
Coming to the quality of food, I really cannot give any rating because it's just plain, simple and nothing special at all. You can get this quality of food in any roadside restaurant, maybe even better.
Runny daal, minuscule pieces of fish and chicken cooked in a hurry, aloo-posto with only aloo and no posto.
Waiters cannot keep up with the serving.
Daal and posto bora took a long time to arrive, by then we had eaten everything, so started all over again.
If you are not fussy and really hungry, then do go fotlr it.
Otherwise,I would recommend, planning in advance and go for much better places in the area.
I don't think will ever improve or even care (given all the bad reviews), because, they will always do excellent business just because of the location!
Bad food, Poor Service, people over there are not at all cooperative. We ordered 3 plates meal and 1 plate chicken and 1 plate fish. Chicken was uncooked, there was a fly in the rice....overall it was completely tasteless
Food is prepared in extremely unhygienic environment. Plates are not clean and leafs are old as well. Previously it was decent enough but recently it has been degraded alot. They have increased the prices and depleted the quality.
Each meal costs Rs120 and chicken 1 plate (3 pieces)- Rs100
Terrible experience, it has lost its traditional Bengali food experience.
I would NEVER RECOMMEND anyone to visit this place for food. Don't get deceived by its vintage type outlook!
