I visited this historical landmark right after visiting the marvel of Patan - Rani ki Vav. This place is poorly maintained wihh minimal signs to guide the visitors. And this inspite of the fact that the local ASI office is located within this facility. I almost returned back because I could not find anything worthwhile but then decided to explore further and found the erstwhile Lake. Good place to revisit a historical site in Patan.

Situated in the north-west of Patan, Sahastralinga Talav is an artificial water storage tank constructed by the Chalukyan king Sidharaj Jai Singh in the late eleventh century. The tank gets water supply by a channel from river Sarasvati. Back then the tank would be brimming with water, the architectural design of the tank is praised for being the perfect amalgamation of design for water conservation and also reflection of the Hindu spirituality. It is said that due a curse by a beautiful woman from the tank diggers community, the king died without an heir and the tank remains devoid of water ever since. It is said that there existed a lot of shrines dedicated to various gods and goddesses by the side of the tank, today however, there are just remains. When you visit the place, make sure you read the tourism boards and listen to the version of the locals to know about the stories which do the roundabout this place. Here there are just the remains which can be seen in the pictures. Otherwise here there is only a garden where people can come for a picnic. It is a nice place for history lovers.

From Rani Ki Vav Sahastraling talav (Lake) is just a 1km away. It is an Man-made water reservoir, which is now completely dry. It was built by solanki king Siddhraj Jaisingh. The reservoir is a great example of water management system of old times. An old Shiva temple in ruins also situated here. Also one small museum of some sculptures and ruins part of temples are stored here in one room. This place has not been taken care of or properly restored, hence in an average condition. Not much crowded place like Rani ki vav step well. There is no proper parking space available here and no entry ticket required to visit.

Historical Place Of Patan.. Sahasralinga Tank is among the many artificial tanks built in different parts of Gujarat under the patronages of Jayasimha Siddharaja (1092-1142 AD). There was earlier a smaller tank named Durlabh Sarovar at this place, built by Durlabharaja.

Sahasralinga Tank or Sahasralinga Talav is a medieval artificial water tank in Patan, Gujarat, India. It was commissioned during Chaulukya (Solanki) rule, but now it is empty and in a ruined state. It is a Monument of National Importance protected by Archaeological Survey of India (N-GJ-161). Sahasralinga Tank is among the many artificial tanks built in different parts of Gujarat under the patronages of Jayasimha Siddharaja (1092-1142 AD). There was earlier a smaller tank named Durlabh Sarovar at this place, built by Durlabharaja. Jayasimha Siddharaja in early part of 12th century, expanded and decorated this lake with temples, Kunds, ghats and various other buildings, including Palace and educational institutions and Dharmashalas. The Sahasralinga Tank was one of the largest and grandest water tanks in size. The lake was in rectangular form. The great embankment surrounding it is of solid brick work and was faced with stone masonry forming flights of steps to the water's edge. Water was directed from Saraswati river by a canal to this lake. Inside the canal, there was a Kupa (reservoir), called Rudra-Kupa, which was built to smooth the flow of the gushing water from the river. It was named Rudra-Kupa rightly, as it checked the flow of Saraswati river just as god rudra (Shiva) checked the flow of river Ganga. From Rudra-Kupa, the water was diverted to Sahasralinga tank by three channels, thus it was called Triveni. On the banks of lake, numerous little temples containing over 1000 shiva-lingam were placed, which brought from Amarkantak. On all sides, temples were built, most of which are either destroyed or converted to mosques. There was image of god Vishnu on the brink of lake water.

Sahastraling Talav is a mediaeval artificial water tank in Patan. It was commissioned during Solanki rule. It is a monument of National importance protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The Sahastraling Talav was originally known as Durlabh Sarovar and was Constructed by King Durlabh Raja and was repaired and renovated by King Siddharaj during 1903 - 1143 A.D. This is one of the biggest tank of the solanki period. This is a good place for History Lovers.
