Shahi (Royal) Baoli Stepwell is an ancient water reservoir constructed between 1784 and 1794 under the reign of Nawab Asif-ud-Daula. It was built adjacent to Bara Imambara as a means to provide food and water to common people of Awadh during the severe famine. Shahi Baoli was also used as a Royal Guest House on many occasions when Warren Hastings, the Governor General of East India Company, stayed here. One of the famous stories linked with this historical structure is that the treasurer of Nawab, who had the key of the treasure and map to where treasure was hidden, committed suicide so as to stay loyal to his master and not give any clues of treasure to greedy British army. It is said that the ghost of the treasurer still haunts the place.

Not as beautiful as other Baolis I have seen although some of the mysterious facts made me visit here. Located inside the bars Imambara complex. Will not get into describing the history as it's readily available online. I had heard that there are 2 floors below water and that can be done by throwing a coin in the water. Unfortunately there were no water to try this trick when I visited. Overall a 20'mins walk might help you imagine the bygone days although be sure of coming precariously close to passionate lovers wanting some privacy.
The Shahi Baoli was constructed in order to be used as a water reservoir. Myths like water of this well being connected to the river flowing nearby or a secret treasure map and the key to the treasure being thrown into this well have been quite popularly widespread. Baoli is extensively popular for it's exceptional architectural design. Nawab Asif-ud-daula built it during the years 1784-1794 and got the design of this baoli drafted by Kifayat-ullah, who was one of the most skilful architects of those times. The exquisite Indo-Islamic architectural design of this structure makes it an impeccably unique edifice. The Shahi Baoli was built along with the other units of the Bada Imambara in order to provide food and work to the famine-stricken natives of Awadh. To the east of the main courtyard of the Bada Imambara lies the Shahi Baoli. Entrance to the Shahi Baoli is through a double arched gateway. On moving further, an open flight of stairs lead down to the step-well. Encompassing this well stands a multi-storeyed structure which comprises many open arched windows and inter-connected galleries.

It is situated just inside the premises of Bara Imambara. You need not buy a different ticket for visiting this place. It's a wonderful place to explore. If you are visiting Lucknow you must go to Bauli Stepwell. It is a structure of 16th century. It as a nawabi feel when you are starting to step in the place.
No more words only Shahi Imam's Shahi Bauli. I think it is used for water reservoir in ancient time.
Loved the architecture of this place and draws a lot of tourist. I saw the well area being littered with plastic bottles and other waste which was sad to see. The depth in the design is something that is awe-inspiring and the intelligence behind the design. There's one point where you stand inside the well area and you can see the people at the entrance but people outside cannot see you. Nice short visit after you see the Bara Imambara.
