If you are fond of Feluda, you'll know or definitely have heard the address, 100A Garpar road. Lalmohon babu lives in Garpar. This is the ancestral house of Satyajit Ray. Now a school, Aethenium Institution.
It's a school now. I didn't know before going so I ended up meeting some teachers there. They showed me the room where Satyajit Ray was born and where Rabindranath Tagore would visit his father. Another place to go to see abt Satyajit Ray is Bishop Leproy road.
Place to visit, but no entry to see the inner part
"aami grrpaarrer lok mshaai ...." You have to be there to feel the magic, to see the history getting unfolded. However, it's a shame that we, as a society, have failed our ancestors... SELAAAAM to the great U Roy and Sons....
This area should be maintained as it is related to our cultural legacy... The statues of the legends should be cleaned and there should be some detail rather than just a signboard for telling the history of this place... At first it was hard to find as the location in Google map is not correct.
It's a very different feeling to visit the ancestral place of the doyen.
100A Garpar Road is a heritage building that was once home to one of India's best known literary families. Upendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury, his son Sukumar Ray and grandson Satyajit Ray all stayed here. Satyajit Ray was born here in 1921 and stayed till 1927 before moving to Beltala in south Kolkata after the house was sold to the Mullicks. In his autobiography Jakhan Chhoto Chhilam, Ray has drawn a vivid sketch of the building and recollected childhood memories of the Athenium Institution, which later moved into the building where he once lived. The famous Bengali children's magazine, Sandesh, was published from the ground floor. The two-storeyed structure now houses the Athenium Institution Higher Secondary School. Ray had modelled the famous character, Jatayu, in his Feluda series on a teacher of this school.
Govt should more vigilant to improve and maintain this kind of historical structure.
