Sat Deule - Featured Reviews (715)
Believed to be built during 1000 AD, this temple is among the very few existing temples of that era in Burdwan. The architecture and other ornamentations of the temple has close resemblance with other temples in Purulia Districts and Odisha. This temple is located on the northern side of the NH, in a village with access to NH via a metal road. It can also be reached from the Memari Road. The surroundings are beautifully maintained with a garden. Although there is no direction signage on the way, the locals are very helpful.
Located on the right side of the Durgapur Expressway nearly 5 kms. to Palsit Toll Plaza (from Kolkata to Burdwan). As construction of the Expressway is underway we have to do some off-roading and have to drive around 1 km in the opposite lane (with much fear on an Expressway). One have to go around narrow village road (metalled) for nearly 2 kms to reach the spot. No signage is present anywhere. Locals are very helpful to find the place. The Deul is well preserved with a beautiful garden, all done by ASI. The Jain Deul was built around 10 th century A.D. If you have some interest about our past then you may pay a visit to this otherwise not so famous place. It may cost you 30 minutes.
One of the earliest brick built temple architecture of Bengal, standing tall since the last 1000 years. This unique architecture is a clasical example of Bengal Rekha Deul which took inspiration from Orissan Deul but later developed as a unique typology due to its distinct features. Definitely worth a visit for all those who has particularly interest in history & heritage of Bengal.
First of all, it is a must visit architectural site. The place does not have any ticketing system. It is much older than it looks. The structure is daunting as well as sophisticated. However, ASI needs to take better care of the lawn and the garden. One can spend maximum of 30 minutes here. Other than the architecture there is nothing else to see.
It's a very beautiful historical places near Memari Bardhamman.
Great Historical place. But the ASI should work more to protect the Heritage.
Wonderful place for one day tour. This monument has been declared to be of National Importance under the Ancient Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. The Sat Deul was built in bricks in the style of Orissan Rekha- Deul. The temple is 'Pancharatha' on plan and remarkable for fine corbelled- arch at the Entrance. Equally interesting is the motif of interlacing chaitya windows on the exterior walls. Stylistically, the temple may be dated to circa 10th Century CE. The monument is maintained by the Archeological Survey of India. The garden placed before the monument is maintained by the Horticulture Division of Archeological Survey of India. It is one of the best place for one day tour, pre- wedding shoot and outside picnic spot.
Definitely worth a visit (won't take you more than 45 minutes-1 hour to complete the detour from NH2) if you're passing by span on Kolkata Delhi highway. Area is fenced but no one to keep things under check. The temple certainly needs more attention from ASI. Its name reads "Sat Deul". BUILT IN BRICKS IN THE STYLE OF ORISSAN REKHA-DEUL, THE TEMPLE IS 'PANCHARATHA' ON PLAN AND REMARKABLE FOR FINE CORBELLED-ARCH AT THE ENTRANCE. EQUALLY INTERESTING IS THE MOTIF OF INTERLACING CHAITYA WINDOWS ON THE EXTERIOR WALLS. STYLISTICALLY, THE TEMPLE MAY BE DATED TO CIRCA 10TH CENTURY AD!
