Sakleshpur Railway Station situated at an elevation of 906m above sea level is the gateway to one of the most interesting trekking routes in Karnataka. This was made possible thanks to Indian Railway Officers. Sakleshpur can be reached by trains from Bangalore, Hassan, Subrahmanya Road, Mangaluru, Kannur, Karwar, Yeshvantpur, and Udupi among others. One of the beautiful places to visit is the Sakleshpur Fort or the Manjarabad Fort. There are autorickshaw available for the visit to the fort. You can also visit some of the private coffee plantations with necessary permision. I found the cost of grounded coffee and coffee beans in Sakleshpur to be cheaper than some of the other places and hence packed my luggage with several packets of aromatic coffee. The packed coffee has a high content of chicory though. The Hemavathi River flows close to the station and the feeling of sitting on the banks surrounded by deep forests and small hills is quite relaxing. The silence is often broken by the honking of diesel locomotives as the station falls on a major goods transport route. You can also try out the Green Route Trek. The trek terrain unusual as you use the railway track to trek from Donigal to Yedakumeri Station. During the trek you will go over several old railway bridges, beautiful green valleys, several small and big waterfalls, old railway tunnels, and if you are dangerously lucky then you may spot the much feared King Cobra. If you are traveling by train then the route from Subrahmanya Road to Sakleshpur and vice-versa is magical and extremely scenic.

Vista dome after sakleshpura starts with mesmerising view of the ghats. The train tracks go from tunnels to tunnels every curve points and after every tunnel we get beautiful view points from the train. Vista domes are available every morning from MAJN to SBC and SBC to MAJN with ticket price from 1,500Rs. Its a beautiful adventure with this train. One must try.

Fantastic western ghat terrain area...One of the most fascinating places in Karnataka close to Mangalore! Sakleshpur is famous for its green train and scenic beauty... Also, famous Railway track trek... A trekking along the meter gauge railway line between Donigal and Yedukumeri (17 Kms - 8 Hrs) is a unique experience and is popularly referred to as 'Yedakumeri Railway Trek' or 'Green Route Trek'. This route is nature lovers & photographers paradise. The trek route has several curves, tunnels and bridges. The mountains stretch with more than 25 waterfalls and several small streams. Trekking usually starts from the Dhonigal (on Bangalore - Mangalore route) and run along the tracks to Yedakumeri. Camping can be done at Dhonigal & Yedakumeri stations. Trek can be extended till Kukke Subramanya (16 Kms extra).
