Sajra fort is located on top of naammam malai hill, Vellore. If you love trekking or hiking this is the best place for you in Vellore. You should wear proper footwear because the trail leading to the fort is very rough and you may encounter snakes and scorpions on the way. One caution, don't go alone
Take water and some snacks as you will need lot of energy while climbing the hill. Morning and evening time is the most appropriate time but don't go before the dawn. It is advisable to return back before the dusk. There are groups of monkeys on the hill. Don't give them eatbles otherwise they may attack you. It would be good if you take one walking stick with you it will help you in climbing as well as keeping the monkeys away.,
Sajra and Gojra forts are hill forts built on top of Naammam Malai hill to the east of Vellore City in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Sajra and Gojra literally means "smart" and "cute" respectively.
In 1678, during the siege of Vellore Fort by Chhatrapati Shivaji's army, the commandant of the Vellore Fort Abdulla Khan (Abyssinian) defended the fort. Chhatrapati Shivaji deputed his Sardar Sabnis Narhari Rudra with 2000 cavalry and 5000 infantry to continue the siege which lasted fourteen months. He built two small forts, Sajra and Gojra on the hill top which is nearly 2 km from the Vellore Fort. These forts dominated the lower Vellore Fort allowing it to be effectively bombarded. It is said out of the original 500 soldiers defending the fort 400 perished. Abdulla Khan surrendered the Vellore Fort on 21 August 1678, and the Maratha Empire strengthened the Vellore Fort's fortifications, ruling for 30 years
Takes about 45 minutes to an hour for an average not do fit adult to hike up to the fort. Amazing view of the city from the top which is totally worth the climb. One could get lost easily. So for those planning a trek up to the fort, the best thing to do would be ask about people who have been there before. That would give you an idea about your trek to the top.
Beautiful place but it's really hot. Lot's of spines trees. Heard this place is a bit dengerous. So should go in group of people. Very beautiful place. Should visit.
There's not a specific way to climb upto the hill. you have to make your own way through the bushes and stones.but the view will be worth it. It's a relaxing place.
HIKE WITH Caution
Foremast important point is Google's location of this place is not correct and it is actually two streets off.Its better to start the hike from the water stream are ask some locals for route.since the roads are more narrow try to go by bike.
There is no actual pre determined way to the top of the hill it is just free climbing which you think is not most dangerous and can proceed.Dont stand in a place for more time as there are more snakes, monkeys and some other insects.it is best to go not in a raining day as most of the rocks will be slippery and rolling if we keep our feet on it.
Hiking this place is a really good and it's really adventurous but don't go solo try to hike in a group .
Local people warned us before climbing that don't climb to top also don't give your phone to people as there might snatch and go.so be careful to surrounding and enjoy the hike.
Tamilnadu Vellore, Mountain is very beautiful places. and enjoy full. But The hills need to be climbed very carefully, the feet need to be sifted, the last border area of India is Tamil Nadu.
Excellent place to visit. Whole vellore is surrounded by mountains and sajra fort is the tallest among them. The veiw from the top of the mountain is breath taking. Anyone visiting vellore must go and try some adventurous thing by visiting the sarja fort. Its very lovely, i cant explain my whole experience in words. So it would be better if you visited the place. Try to climb the mountain between 3 - 4 pm because wheather will be excellent and you will not feel thirsty and you get enough time to enjoy your evening. And avoid using sandels as the stones are very slippery try to use shoes or climb with naked foot.
