Rudraksha in Lodh village is the authentic, rather ethnic, taste of Kumaon. Frankly, if I must pick one food to eat everyday for the rest of my life, this Dubka - Bhaat it is!
About the food: The preparation is quintessential pahadi. Whole masala and bhat (black gram) is grinded on a massive Sil - Batta (photo attached!) and cooked on firewood chula/bhatti. In Kumaon, we make this "Dubka" using different dals, even besan, but "Bhat ka Dubka" is the most tricky and rigorous. Even if you do make it, taste is nothing like Rudraksha. They have a time-tested recipe perfected over decades. Best part, sides served in form of spicy aloo sabji and tangy mango chutney
Have been visiting for past many years, and often travel from Bhowali, just to have this slice of heavenFew years back, they renovated the place to be more spacious and modern. Won't lie, I do miss the old look of the shop with its quaint wooden benches and chairs. Thankfully, have pictures to look back into the past -- some attached, for anyone interested.
Menu: Rice used is high quality basmati (personally, had no issue with the mota chawal they used earlier). They also serve Joli (Kadi) and Mix Dal, and make hot rotis too, which I'm told is all good. I have never tried anything else and stick to Dubka - Bhaat. That's their USP and that's what I visit for. All this goodness will cost you just 100 bucks per person.
Sadly, we are losing our authentic food to pizza, burgers, chow mein, and momos. Government should promote/encourage businesses that are preserving the traditional pahadi heritage.
Hot Tip: after a heavy meal, you can roam around in the lush green villages of Lodh featuring cosy and traditional Uttarakhand home.
Hotter Tip: Nothing helps digests food like dessert! Travel 10 kms. down toward Someshwar. There is a beatdown hundred+ years old shop serving the tastiest Malpuas you'll ever have! Now I am craving both
