Inside the Ronald Ross Block of SSKM hospital (formerly known as Presidency General hospital), there is a heritage laboratory. There is a plaque on the wall of the laboratory which says that in this laboratory, Ronald Ross made his iconic discovery that malaria is caused by the bite of the mosquitoes in 1898. Sir Ronald Ross KCB KCMG FRS FRCS[1][2] (13 May 1857 - 16 September 1932) was a British medical doctor who received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1902 for his work on the transmission of malaria, becoming the first British Nobel laureate, and the first born outside Europe. His discovery of the malarial parasite in the gastrointestinal tract of a mosquito in 1897 proved that malaria was transmitted by mosquitoes, and laid the foundation for the method of combating the disease. He was a polymath, writing a number of poems, published several novels, and composed songs. He was also an amateur artist and natural mathematician. He worked in the Indian Medical Service for 25 years. It was during his service that he made the groundbreaking medical discovery.
Almost opposite the Victoria Memorial, is a small arched gate at the western end of SSKM Hospital, there is a tablet commemorating the discovery by Sir Ronald Ross in 1898 that malarial fevers were caused by parasites carried by the Anopheles mosquito. He had carried out years of painstaking research in the hospital laboratory just behind the gate. He visited PG Hospital in January 1927, when the "Gate of Commemoration" bearing his statue and poem in the plaque was unveiled by Lord Lytton. A must see for Kolkata visitors.
From Prosenjit Das Gupta's "10 Walks in Calcutta" (HarperCollins, 2000): Towards the western end of SSKM Hospital, almost opposite the Victoria Memorial, is a small arched and pedimented gate with a tablet commemorating the discovery by Sir Ronald Ross in 1898 that malarial fevers were caused by parasites carried by the Anopheles mosquito. He had carried out years of painstaking research in a hospital laboratory just behind the gate.
This earned Sir Ronald the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1902, the first time for anyone in India.
SSKM Hospital itself has a hallowed tradition, having been set up as fully as 1800, on a property that had been originally purchased in 1768 from the Rev. John Kiernander.
The red-brick buildings within a huge compound have the quiet elegance and dignity of nineteenth century architecture.
Sir Ronald Ross Memorial..... who recieved Nobel Prize in 1902
It's just there. No proper memorial is there. From outside nobody can be happy to see the place.
No need to go inside the hospital and search. Difficult to find. It's on the main road. Right if the main hospital/college gate. It's A gate and a small room.
