The Rock Fort was although a very good tourist attraction it was very poorly maintained. Lack of hygiene and efficient management was visible from afar. Needs serious changes.
Great place to see whole trichy city. There are atleast 400 stairs to reach the top. Visit during evening time is the best.
A very scenic area, and a must visit when in Trichy. There's a Ganesha temple at the top and a fort + stone steps inside an ancient stronghold. Be prepared to climb a lot of steps, but in the end it is very much worth it. The steps are carved within the rock itself
It is just hill with a view. What is annoying is that cab and auto drivers. Tamil Auto and cab drivers are very rude, uncivilized and always try to charge high. Not just some but all of them are uncivilized. Public transport is cheap but due to language issue one has to opt cabs. Avoid tamilnadu visit if you can.
It was a bliss to receive blessings from Ganapathy of Rockfort. An ancient temple to visit. You should try visiting it in the evening.
Very excellent place to visit
Rockfort is one of the mesmerizing fort ever.. If you visit Trichy visiting Rockfort is must.. there are so many temples built with stones
The temple is situated close to the base of the Rockfort and was constructed by the Pallava king Mahendravarman I in the 6th century AD. Shiva is worshiped as Thayumanavar, and is represented by the lingam and his consort Parvati is depicted as Mattuvar Kuzhalammai. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. According to Hindu legend, a pregnant woman named Rathnavathi was an ardent devotee of Shiva and he arrived in the form of her mother to attend to her delivery. The presiding deity is thus named Thayumanaswamy, the one who acted as mother. The Rockfort is a fortress which stands atop a 273-foot-high rock, consisting of a set of monolithic rocks accommodating many rock-cut cave temples. Originally built by the Pallavas, it was later reconstructed by the Madurai Nayaks and Vijayanagara rulers. The major complex in the temple are believed to be built during the 8th century by the Pandyan Empire. The temple has six daily rituals at various times from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., and twelve yearly festivals on its calendar. The Chittirai festival during the Tamil month of Chittirai (April - May) is celebrated for fifteen days, portraying the various incidents associated with the temple legend. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Tiruchirapalli was a part of the Chola kingdom and it houses a number of exquisitely sculpted temples and fortresses, the centre of which is the Rockfort temple. The temple is built in the Dravidian style of architecture; The rock-cut cave temples of the Rockfort, along with the gateway and the Erumbeeswarar Temple, are listed as monuments of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.
