This is a large wrought iron cannon with Persian inscriptions located next to the Chhinnamasta Temple Bishnupur. This huge cannon is the example of bravery, spirit & artisan of Malla Kings ruling over the place. This iron made cannon built in the 16th century to combat with external invaders at a time when there was no advanced way to extract metal from iron ore. The cannon is 3.8 Mtr long & more than 12 MT in weight and made with a cost of more than Rs. 1.25 lacs at that time. There is a myth that during the attack of Maratha warriors in the 17th century, lord Madan Mohan, the god worshipped by the Malla Kings, himself fought by this cannon to save the city. Presently the canon is kept at a square shaped courtyard within the city locality between Rasmancha & Jor-Mandir Group of Temples. The place is maintained by ASI. There are few stalls at adjacent areas selling local handicrafts, a bargain deal from there may be useful to collect some memento/ show pieces. Out of surrounding remarkable 'Terracota' temples, this is a different face of Malla Kings & a stop over for 15 minutes is enough to reveal the same.
It is an wonderful work of metal. It is 3.8 meter in length and as you can see in the picture it is just huge. I think it is more then thousand killos in weight. It was built by mallu Kings. According to mythology, this cannon was fired by Lord Krishna against marathas.
During the reign of Bir Hambir the Dal Madal, one of the largest-bored cannons even made, was founded, demonstrating the skill of artisans of that time. Dal Madal was made by Jagannath Karmakar. "Dal Madal" means "destruction of enemy". This is one of the important historical attractions of Bishnupur, situated at the Chhinnamasta road. a canon which defended the local raja from the maratha attacks is exhibited on the way back from the Maa chinmasta temple to the main town. Presently the canon is kept at a square shaped courtyard within the city locality in between Rasmancha & Jor-Mandir Group of Temples. The place is maintained by ASI. There are few stalls at adjacent area selling local handicrafts, a bargain deal from there may be useful to collect some memento/ show piece.
Dalmadal Cannon is one of the must visited place in Bishnupur. It is said that lord Modon Mahan (Lord Krishna) himself use this cannon to save the Malla King and his villages. Probably the largest cannon made by Malla King. The age of this cannon is more than 400 years. It is 3.8 meter in its length. Front side inner diameter is around 29 cm and outer side is 66.
Largest cannon made by the Famous Malla dynasty. As per the local believe, Lord MADAN MOHAN himself used this cannon againt BHASKAR RAO, the maratha invaders, commonly known as Borgi. Don't forget to watch the cannon during your Bishnupur Trip. Another cannon is in the Temple of Debi Mrinmoyee. The local old guide is very helpful. Please give some money for his effort throughout the past decades.
Historical background of this canon is so interesting. It made by malla king. It is now rest beside the Ma Chinnyamasta Mandir. For better information have a look in attached picture. If you visit Bishnupur, then take a visit to it of course.
Its good to visit such a amazing historical place of our country. But sad to see the less maintenence of the place. There should be proper room for parking. Enough space for people to visit. The place is conjested. Connecting roads from the highway are all too narrow for four wheeller.
