Rankala Tower - Historical place in Kolhapur - Kolhapur, India

The location is nice. The lake looks beautiful from far. As you look closer, you will see plastic pollution, people spitting in the lake, throwing stuff, fishing etc. There are benches along the circumference of the lake. There are kiosks too by local vendors. Good place for a long walk.

Rankala Lake is a lake in Kolhapur city. It is also called as Rankala Chowpatty of Kolhapur. It is a spectacular place of Kolhapur. Earlier there was a big stone quarry here. According to Jain belief, stone was supplied from the quarry to the temple ofMahalakshmi and similarly to the 360 Jain temples built by King Gandaraditya. Then due to an earthquake in the 8th or 9th century AD, the mine was expanded and filled with water. During the period of 800 to 900 there were major earthquakes.
