Rajbari Palace - Tourist attraction in Jalpaiguri - Jalpaiguri, India

Seems like a small zamindar Bari, don't know why people calling it Raj Bari

Rajbari palace of Jalpaiguri is ancestral residence of royal family of Baikanthapur. It's a personal property and not open for public. But their Shri Durga temple is famous in the town and around. People from all around gather there during Durga Puja. There is a kali temple just in front of the palace. It's a temple of historical values. Overall the place is a very attractive place.

Baikunthopur Estate The Baikunthopur Estate was established by Siswa Singh, after defeating the King of Bhutan and Gour in 1522, covering an area of 328 square miles (850 km). His capital was at first built in today's Bodaganj in the thick forests near the river Teesta and in the Rajganj Block of Jalpaiguri district. It was shifted to the present site Jalpaiguri in the open plains by the thirteenth Raikat, Darpadev (1713-1726), in a sign of growing confidence. The large pond near the palace was excavated at the time of Sarva Dev (1800-1847). Jion Gomasta Mohammedan from Dinajpur and a Rajbansi from Jalpaiguri were employed as contractors, and it is said that they were paid in cowries (conch shell), and not in coins. {Information from wikipidia}

One of the historical monuments to visit in Jalpaiguri , Rajbari Palace used to be residence of former ruler of Baikunthapur Estate. Now it is standing lonely with its all heritage within itself. There is a entrance structure without any gate and followed by the palace surrounded by trees and open ground. This place is very quiet and calm and lots of birds around. In front of the gate there is a pond and it was full of immigrant birds when I visited in winter. Loved this place very much

It's a very ancient place along with the importance of debi chowdhurani who visited here.. so make it a must visit in the town

Jalpaiguri Rajbari is one of the most popular sightseeing options for tourists who tour the city of Jalpaiguri. Rajbari literally means "palace". The Rajbari in Jalpaiguri was the former residence of the local rulers of the Baikunthapur estate, the Raikats. History of Rajbari and Raikats The princely Raikats were the semi-independent local rulers of the Baikunthapur estate reigning from 1523 till 1771. They were related to the Koch dynasty which ruled in the Kamata kingdom, roughly the western part of the ancient Kamrupa. The Raikat family was first established by Siswa Singh who defeated the King of Bhutan as well as Gour in 1522. The capital of the Raikats was in Siliguri. This region was then virtually inaccessible from outside, protected by dense forests and the river Teesta in the west and Mahananda River in the east. Around 1720, the Raikat ruler Jayanto Deb Raikat, moved the capital to the present Jalpaiguri site going towards the plains. The Raikats maintained their semi-autonomy paying partial tribute to the Mughal rulers in Bengal. When the British claimed Baikunthapur territory, they became Zamindars or tenants of the estate, though remaining largely independent. The British increased their control through their system of establishing district commissioners, after the growth and exploitation of commercial tea plantations. After Indian independence, most of the property has been taken by the West Bengal Government for restoration work. Rajbari Palace as a Tourist Attraction in jalpaiguri / (The Raikat Kali Temple) The Rajbari in Jalpaiguri is a popular sightseeing spot for both locals and tourists who view the city. It is situated 3 km north of the Jalpaiguri Railway Station. Located in Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Road, the palace is adjacent to the District Sports Complex. The Jalpaiguri Rajbari is composed of a large palace and its portico or porch as the entrance of the building. It is also adorned with a beautiful garden hemmed with shrubs, flowers and trees within the palace grounds. The gate of the Jalpaiguri Rajbari is an architectural marvel since it's one of the largest structures of an un-reinforced concrete arch. There is also a beautifully laden pond known as the Rajbari Dighi within the palace, set amidst a cool, shady garden. This is one of the ideal places to rest after a day's sightseeing. In addition to the said pond or "dighi", there are other lakes in the palace ground. However it would not be worth venturing out for them as they have not been maintained.

It's an amazing place for chill out with friends... Here is a small playground for small kids, its a area around a pond so it's also good for senior citizens for a short walk for better health.. place is very greeny full of trees which make u feel energetic.. here u will also find a temple of lord Shiva.. in the park there is a food court which is like ok ok.. this place run by solar power which is a great thing now a days... Tickets rate of now is Rs 10 per head.. but only for the park area, temple area n bathing area in the pond of the place is still free.
