Heritage building of Kolkata, currently no one lives here due to its condition. This old building structure shows how beautiful it was in the old days. It could be tourist attractions but it needs heavy restoration.

Bit confused what rating star need to put As the building is an European architectural wise but due to the lack of any kinda maintenance this heritage/historical significant building is becoming a haunted house. This building serves the major significant: 1. Sri Aurobindo Ghosh spent couple of months in this building. 2. Gurudev Rabindrnath Tagore recite his own poems here during the literature meeting. 3. Raja Subodh Chandra Mallick spent his childhood. 4. Brinda Karat and Radhika Roy are the great grand nieces of this Mallick family. After talking with the surrounding people who used to stay and earned from the adjacent area of this erstwhile palace get to know that since 35 years this building is like this only. #KMC, state government, #ASI, #archeologicalsurveyofindia #unesco #heritage immediately should take action to preserve this building.

Such a glorious architecture is in ruins and none of the government did anything about it. Perhaps Indians are the only ones who are so indifferent about their legacy. All the parties that come to form the government at any given time are always busy mudslinging at each other, but nobody plays a constructive role in protecting the legacies or the heritages we own. What is the government of the self-styled Mother of Bengal Mamata Banerjee doing, apart from robbing common people of their wealth? It is our earnest request to them to turn their attention towards protecting this building and the likes of it, whenever they get some time out of their daily business of plundering the wealth of common man, minority appeasement, and creating unrest in the state.

The first look gives a dilapidated look to this grandiose building. But a closer look takes you to a different world altogether. I simply fell in love with this magnificent pinkish colored building but could imagine it's past glorious years. Sadly it is said that it is a haunted house now, not sure whether it is true or not. The big iron bar doors and balcony still stand strong. I would recommend you to pay at least a visit if you love history, architecture or past stories. #historical

Subodh Chandra Basu Mallik (9 February 1879 - 14 November 1920), commonly known as Raja Subodh Mallik, was a Bengali Indian Industrialist, Philanthropist and nationalist. Mallik is noted as a nationalist intellectual who was one the co-founders of the Bengal National College, of which he was the principal financial supporter. He was close to Aurobindo Ghosh and financed the latter's nationalist publications including Bande Mataram Patrika. Mallik was born in Pataldanga suburban of Calcutta to Prabodh Chandra Basu Mallik. He graduated from St. Xaviers College of Calcutta and Presidency College of Calcutta before enrolling in fine arts at Trinity College Cambridge in 1900. However, he returned from England before completing his studies, and immediately deep-dived into the nationalist movement. His palatial house in what was then Wellington square in Calcutta became a major hub of political activity. In 1906, Mallik was among a group of leading luminaries of Bengal who founded the National Council for Education to promote indigenous and nationalist education in higher education. His donated Rs 100,000 to support the founding of the Bengal National College. He also founded the Life of Asia Insurance Company. Mallik's political activities earned him the ire of the Raj, and he was deported in 1908 in the wake of the Alipore Bomb Conspiracy. Mallik's nationalist work and generous support of the movement earned him the colloquial title of Raja from his grateful countrymen. In independent India, Wellington Square, the site of his palatial residence, was renamed Raja Subodh Mallik Square, while the road housing Jadavpur University, which emerged from the Bengal National College, is now called Raja Subodh Mallik Road. In December 1906, at Raja Subodh Mullick's Palace, during the session of the Congress in Calcutta, there was a historic conference of the revolutionary leaders, presided over by P. Mitter and attended by Sri Aurobindo. In addition to Subodh Mullick, were present Abinash Chakrabarty, Bhupendra Nath Datta (Swami Vivekananda's younger brother), Indra Nandi, Annada Kaviraj; among the important leaders who represented the districts figured Jatindra Nath Mukherjee and his uncle Lalitkumar Chatterjee (Nadia), Jnan Basu (Midnapore), Bireshwar Mukherjee (Jessore), Paresh Lahiri (Mymansingh), Nikhil Ray Maulik and Pulin Das (Dacca). Sri Aurobindo "explained the necessity of money" and admitted that it "could, then, be secured through only dacoity". The suggestion was accepted unanimously. A similar conference was held in 1907 in the same house." Subsequent to Sri Aurobindo's arrest in Alipore Bomb Case on 2.May.1908, the Police conducted a house-search from this house situated at 12, Wellington Square on 10.May.1908, whilst the Mullick family was away at Varanasi. The whole house was turned upside-down in a bid to obtain incriminating evidence. Subodh Mullick's palatial house at No.12, Wellington Square still stands today, but in a state that brings tears to the eyes. It is a large, three-storey mansion of pinkish reddish colour. From the road one can see a high wrought-iron gate which in the past was opened to let in horse carriages. Everything about the house evokes an age of graceful luxury. It is said that the room at the corner, which has one window on the side of the main thoroughfare and the other facing a narrow lane, used to be occupied by Sri Aurobindo. A century ago this grand house was lit up with chandeliers, and the exquisitely carved wooden balcony must have had a regal beauty, while today it is covered in dust and wild plants. The architecture is more European than Indian and in its glorious days even the decoration inside was European; the rooms had carpets, book-lined shelves, and paintings. This mansion is a historical monument where some of the high moments of the freedom struggle were lived out..But till the date no one stay inside the palace at night. It is very famous as the "House of Swadesi ghosts".

It's a historical palace in ruins. It would be better if it's renovated and made into a museum.
