I went there during my college days, it's a beautiful place. You can see blackbuck, hare, dholes etc and an awesome beach side.
Awesome place to visit. Charged 200 rs for adults. But must visit place in kodiakarai. Oldest light house is there. Constructed by cholan family it seems.
Cars are not allowed inside now.. we can go only in government van cost 750 for entire van.. can share with the families who is willing to go.. only spotted deer and black buck deers are available in sanctuary.. atlast we have point calimere Beach and chola kalangarai vilaku. good historic location and peaceful place..
Nice place to visit when you are at Kodikkarai . Own vehicles are allowed to take a tour of sanctuary. There is small entry fee have to pay. One can see many aquatic and other birds. Wild horses and blackbucks are the attraction. We were lucky to see Indian Hare and Indian jackal. Beach at the end of the sanctuary is so serene. Its better to go somewhat early before evening to see wildlife properly. Please like if the review was useful to you.
Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Kodiakarai, is located at the southeastern tip of Tamil Nadu, India. It is situated at Point Calimere (Kodiakarai), where the Bay of Bengal meets the Palk Strait. This wildlife sanctuary is known for its diverse ecosystems, including dry evergreen forests, mangrove swamps, and wetlands. It is a crucial habitat for a variety of migratory birds, especially during the winter months. The sanctuary is home to numerous bird species, including flamingos, herons, and pelicans, making it a significant destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
A great place to spot indigenous species of Tamil Nadu like the black buck and Indian Jackal. You can also spot lots of wild horses which are not indigenous species but are introduced 1000 years ago by the Arabian traders. During the chola era this was a trading center.
Photography-Time Pass-Wildlife. This Kodiyakarai Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary Looks Good. Can Sight Lots of Deer and some Indian Jackal. Other than that there is nothing Here. Not Maintained at all but they collect Rs.5 for Maintenance. Its consider to be little waste of time but Have the vast area of forest area and lots of deer. Vehicles Not allowed inside forest. 7 Km of walk will cover the Forest. Can typically Spend less than a hour. My Recommendation to the visitor is to photograph Deer and Indian jackals and move on. Because you wont find any thing more than that. Sorry for our camera date. Photographed on 31.05.2018.
We didn't actually plan to go here. On the way to Madurai, came across the sign and board and just drove in. We went in the wrong time too. We reached there by 1pm and there were a handful of birds that we can see. But in the distance We could see the horizon filled with Migratory birds. The local ppl said by around 4-5 the birds get close to The shore. And seems oct-Nov is the best time to Visit. We planned to come to Again Next Month. The place has no shade for cover from The sun. Carry water and Things for yourself I didn't see shops anywhere.
