Pohale Caves Pohale Caves, also Pohala Caves or Pawala Caves, are a group of Buddhist caves located in Kolhapur District, Maharashtra, India, about 15 km northeast of Kolhapur. Quick Facts Coordinates ... The caves are rather plain and were excavated in a rocky area near Jyotiba's hill. There is one large vihara, about square of about 34', with 14 columns on three sides and 22 cells around the central hall (7' long, 5' broad and 7' high). There is also a Chaitya, and one more cave with a raised rock-cut seat for a teacher, with a watern cistern.

If you want peace just visit this place and sit there peacefully If you're taking bike then it is very easy to reach but if you have car you have to park it on main road and walk 200 to 300 meters. It's such a nice and clean place so try to keep it as it is. I'll suggest to take bike to this place just enjoy Phohale(Alate) Ghat roads. Early mansoon or end mansoon will be good time to visit. You have many options to stay near this place. Just take help of Google to find perfect place for you

Good place to hike while you see good Budhist cave which seems 2K years old. Most of the caves of Maharashtra seems to be as old as 600-1200 AD period but this seems oldest dating Ashoka's period ( As per mentioned by Archeological department) very small and compact cave system of 8- 10 caves with self sufficient in basic needs of that era. In rainy season small waterfall runs over the caves. It is bit slippery so in rainy season one should take care. Caves are maintained by Archaeology department so you find guard specifically on holidays and Sundays.

To spend small amount of time it's an good place near Jotiba hills. In rainy season waterfalls from caves front it's an nicest view you can literally walk through water inside cave.Nice view of Kolhapur city that can spend more time.

Pohale Pandav Leni Caves is a Buddhist Archaeological Site. These caves carved in laterite rock, which are of Buddhist origin, locally called as 'Pandavleni'. 'Leni' is a Marathi word meaning 'cave'. There are two main caves; one of them is supported to have been the school and other the chapel or Chaitya. There are two rock-cut water cisterns and still in use. These caves are carved in five sections in a half round shape and a well decorated roof (Plate 1). In the middle of two rooms, there is a seat, 12 feet high; Shivalinga and Nandi are placed recently in the innermost room, which is locally known as 'Aundhaya Nagnath

Nice place to visit during/post monsoon. This can be combined with visit to Jotiba temple it's hardly 15 minutes from Jotiba. The village road is beautiful. Natural beauty will make you feel relaxed. Families or groups can spend a half day. Peacock can be seen commonly. Personal vehicle is must and it is 30 mins journey from Kolhapur bus stand. Scenic mountains are in surroundings.

Located about a 25 kilometers from Kolhapur. Beautiful wall carvings, the huge monolothic structure is mesmerising. A must visit for all ages. The entire cave complex is a wonder art on the lap of the nature & word is unable to express the reality until one feels it. Note: Couldn't capture photos as this place is closed due to Corona.
