One of the ancient Siva temples in Thiruvananthapuram. According to the renowned historian Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai, the temple dates before the 9th century. The Sivalinga is believed to have installed (prathishta) by Lord Parashurama. Lord Siva and Lord Vishnu are the principal deities here. Sri Ganesa and Naga prathishtas are present. Temple belonged to the prominent Nair tharavad named Kovilvila before it was taken over by The Travancore Devaswom Board. Mahasivarathri and Thiriuvathira are the auspicious days that attracts devotees.
It is one of 108 Shiva lingas that have been installed by Lord Parashurama. Shri Parashurama is an avatar of Shri Vishnu. Out of 108 Shiva lingas, it was my 3rd shiva linga darshan out of 108 shiva lingas on the day before the auspicious day of Attukkal pongala on March 6th, 2023. According to some historians, this temple is about 1200 years old (9th century AD). Lord Shiva Linga has ferocious looks; to reduce the ferocity of it, the idol of Lord Krishna was installed in later days. A newly constructed Bhadrakali temple is in front of the Shiva linga. All the idols in this temple look eastward. where Bhagavathi Bhadrakali's idol looks southward. One will most likely find divinity and inner peace after visiting these temples. This temple lost its significance after the newly constructed Vanchiyoor Sree Kanteshwara Temple. This individual EGO has to dissolve in ocean of bhakthi and should attain divine bliss.
Men have to open shirt before entering the main sanctum. Dress code is there for both men and women. Nice architecture. Arched main sanctum (garbh griha) the rooftop is decorated with intensive wood carving with brass and copper metal work. The roof is in traditional Kerala style. The temple premises also in closes one big pond and in it's middle is Anjaneya (Hanuman) temple. The idol is black stone carved beautiful statue.
