It's a great place to explore for those interested in history, architecture, or spirituality.
In complete awe and amazement after gazing an 8th century magnificent monolithic marvel, which had been present all this while in the busiest and ever crowded streets of Pune. Pataleshwar Caves are said to be built during the Rashtrakuta Period. The caves have been cut out from a monolithic basalt rock. The cave has a temple complex dedicated to Shiv Ji and a circular 'Mandapa' for Nandi Ji. Although there are 3 sanctums in the temple which are said to be of Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh each, the 2 sanctums had their statues lost during the course of their history and later were said to be reclaimed in the 19th century. Presently Shivling is in the central sanctum and the rest of the 2 sanctums are now also dedicated to Parvati Ji and Ganesh Ji. Pataleshwar Caves entrance gate is a 'blink & miss' on the right side of the JM Road while on a vehicle. Since JM Road is a one way road, look at your right for Sadguru Jangali Maharaja Samadhi Mandir. Just next to the Mandir you'll find the Pataleshwar caves entrance gate. Enter the gate and you'll find a tall good old charm - a Bargad Tree - welcoming you with numerous dangling roots and branches. Pataleshwar Caves are the oldest (8th Century) man-made structures in Pune. And we have always overlooked its history, its importance and its grandness. Do visit with friends and family to understand why it has been designated as a monument of National Importance by the ASI. Do not miss ! Entry is free for all !

The Pataleshwar Caves dates back to the 8th century. According to folklore, the temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile and miraculously in just a few hours when they needed shelter. While another theory suggests that its makers saw a faulty line and was abandoned while the temple was still being carved. Thus, giving it an unfinished vibe. But all of these still remain a mystery and there are many caves yet to be dug up. The place is being maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is a representation of the city's heritage. For anyone who gets hypnotised by the structure and ancient architecture, this place will knock your socks off. Astonishingly, the cave has been carved out of single basalt rock and you can find fine craftsmanship and delicate carving on all of these structures. If you look closely and have an eye of an expert, you can easily notice the similarities between the architecture of Pataleshwar Temple and Elephanta caves.
An 8th century rock cut cave temple located in the heart of a bustling city. It is heartbreaking to know that ALL of the sculptures and possible inscriptions are lost at this place. Surprisingly, even now most people living in Pune don't know about the existence of this historically important place in the city. The entry mostly had a few couples and college students hanging around. But yes, there were a few tourists coming and going... It was a really beautiful and peaceful city right there!
