The museum's exhibits beautifully showcase the rich history, culture, and resilience of the Jewish people. The artifacts and interactive displays offer a deep understanding of Jewish traditions and their impact on the world. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, providing valuable insights throughout the visit. I highly recommend this museum to anyone interested in learning more about Jewish heritage and history.
Must visit place if you are a traveller or historian or interested in Historic Places. Initially built in 1100 and reconstructed on 1600+ . Paravur Jewish Synagogue is the one and only Synagogue in India where Ladies allowed to enter and prayer during the time.
It's a old synagogue builded in 16th century. Major archeological things were taken back to Israel when jews left India. The place is renovated recently under the muziris heritage project. The roofing, floor , their building structure etc were real. Other arch and bema are the replica. Ticket charge is bit High.for adult it's cost 55 rs. You will get a guide to explain about the history. Jewish history books are available there.
This is one of the oldest synagogues located on Jew street in Paravur, Kerala. This place has an architectural impact on Jewish history. The place has the traditional architecture of pillared corridors and teak woods used. The pillared pathway leads to the prayer room. This is included in the muziris heritage plan and conserved. The entry fee is 55 /- Indian rupees and guide fees are included. She explained the history very neatly and well behaved too. The place is located very close to Paravur Kodungallor road. Paravur market is situated nearby. There is a boat jetty that is within walking distance from the synagogue. The place is well maintained. The locals are unaware of the place.
The Jewish communities who came here in different periods settled in and around Kodungallur were involved in trade. Synagogues are Jewish places of worship. They received special rights and privileges from the kings to build these Synagogues. Innumerous aspects of Kerala culture were absorbed by them. Repeated attacks by Portuguese, Dutch and Mysore inflicted damages on the Synagogues. When Israel came into being, many Jews returned in groups. The Synagogues were left unattended, and worship there stopped. One of the oldest such Synagogues is the Paravur Synagogue. The Paravur Jewish Synagogue Museum presents the history of Jews and their Synagogues along the Kerala coast, their modes of worship and so on from the point of view of the Jews. The Paravur Synagogue is the most expansive and complete among synagogues in Kerala. It is a construction that has several parts that are linked to each other in specific ways. It consists of a porch with two rooms, very spacious front yard, long corridor, huge doors and stairs made of wood, whitewashed walls built with laterite blocks and a mixture of lime, and the wooden chamber with intricate carvings. The influence of Kerala style is evident in the special seats designed for females in the second floor, the hanging lamps that decorate the prayer room etc. The shape of the fan on the front wall of the prayer hall resembles Portuguese style.
Really a must visit place. Perhaps the only jewish synagogue with a mix of kerala style architecture. The synagogue was once the biggest Jewish synagogue in India . the place is maintained by archeological department of kerala it is a part of the broken history of the Jews that once settled in kerala and after attaining a permanent land for all Jews around the world all the existed Jews in kerala migrated to Israel.
Well maintained. Friendly guide from the tourism department. 7 minute documentary was very informative.
Worth visiting! There's enough exhibits to admire for enough time, provides good insights about the erstwhile Jewish community lives in Cochin, situated close to North paravur Town, reasonable entry fee, mesmerising vibe, and architecture, well trained guides, and curators, also an excellent place for photography.
