Old Dhanushkodi Railway Station - Featured Reviews (3778)
Dhanushkodi Railway Station is an abandoned railway station in Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu. It was destroyed in the 1964 cyclone. Only the ruined structure of Dhanushkodi Railway Station remains today. One side of the station is the Bay of Bengal while the other side is the Indian Ocean. A few peacocks can be seen in this area. There are some small shops here, selling shells and artefacts. Some sell sea food too. This place is recommended for folks who love history, sea/ocean and beaches. There is no wait, or need of tickets to visit this heritage building.
Dhanuskodi had its railway station(direct to Mandapam of Tamil Nadu), a small railway hospital, post office, a higher secondary school and hundreds of locals before 1964. But in December,1964 a sudden cyclone striked that area causing death of more than 800 people. That Remeswam cyclone is regarded as the most powerful cyclones hit in India. Nowadays, only some ruined structure of that civilization is found. There is also some shops by villagers selling various artefacts. I also saw a peacock in the seaside.
This is place in between rameswaram and dhanushkodi. In 1964 one cyclone was formed and destroyed the entire city. There was a train leading from or to this railway station, that passenger along with train gone. Some of the remaining things of the destroyed city we can see here . Along with railway station. The olden railway station in that time. Along with one water tank. One church was also there we can see with some parts remain after the tragedy. One full city disappeared in one day. Now days alot of shops which sells fancy and gift items we can see here. Nothing more worth it. If you are visit here in noon time (10am to 4pm), take one umbrella along with you . Other vice sun will make you dark. One sun glasses is also fine in these area. We didn't stop at this area. Just see from inside of the car. Take some photos and went to dhanushkodi.
Nothing available or no body is there to tell what happened. The ruins are said to be the railway station. No tracks. All removed. Anyway it is a sad story. There are some small shops. Selling shells. We bought some, cheap comared to other places.
I didn't liked it. View is ok. Don't waste your time here and directly go to end point of India there will enjoy more.
Even after decades, the remnants of this railway station is a poignant sight. A whole train was washed off in 1964. The severity of the cyclone can be seen by the washed out railway station, the remains of which can be seen in these photos.
The 1964 cyclone changed the face of railway station of dhanuskodi to history. You can see the remaining of the pillars and bricks all around. In this site you can sight peacocks are roaming. The place is believed to be haunted as the passengers of the train which got submerged into the sea, died. However I believe where lord Rama reside, no ghost soul can do any harm. Jai shree Ram
Dhanushkodi was ravaged by TWO tsunamis - in 1964 and then in 2004. There used to be a train station here. All that remains now is ruins.
