Old British Bungalow - Featured Reviews (101)
I have visited Cuddalore, Fort St. David, several times. It is a magical place which deserves to be better preserved. The photograph of the ruined "bungalow" is actually of the old British hospital. There are, however, several better preserved British bungalows on the fort site. The attached photographs show the one which is the only part of the original fort still standing and incorporated into the remains of the fort curtain wall. In the second picture you can just seen "the Parry Bungalow" (the "tourist" bungalow) in the overgrown fort area. The nearby Port Officer's bungalow (sorry no photograph) was, the last time I saw it, better preserved. Fort St. David was the first place the British established "a factory" (a trading post) in Tamil Nadu. It was fortified as protection from the French in Pondicherry during the Napoleonic Wars which spilt over into India. The area the British were permitted to occupy was originally designated by the distance they could fire a canon ball. It's now very overgrown and full of snakes like cobras (I've seen two) and kraits therefore not the place for a casual stroll. Cuddalore contains the house occupied by Clive of India (see photographs - now the local Cuddalore tax office) and contains some amazing 18th. century warehouses (with canons) built by the Welsh entrepreneur Parry (of Parry's Corner fame, Chennai). Parry himself is buried in Cuddalore. This forgotten corner of Tamil Nadu deserves to be visited more. It's a treasure.
This St.David's Fort was the Administrative Head of British East India Company in Erstwhile undivided India..... But it's now just a ruined fort. Should be cleaned, maintained & preserved for decades to come.
This place looks great but the environment there will be too worse and this place could have been maintained well by government like a tourist place holding all the historic info about this place as this place is located just near silver beach Cuddalore.
Though I had a lot of fun finding this place and exploring it, the sad fact is that, there has been no involvement of the local government to preserve this place. The place is rundown with a lot of debris and filth all around. It has become a place for the local youth to have a drink or two. It's got a lot of potential to be developed to a nice museum of sorts. Hope the responsible government agency acts fast so that we'll not lose another heritage monument.
This bungalow is a derivative of the architecture style erudite workers of ancient India. Don't visit alone or at night because it is kind of spooky. The bungalow is not in a good condition. The staircases had fallen apart years ago. You will have to jump from here and there to reach to the top.
Has a kind of haunted feeling to it. Sadly, no effort from the authority to preserve it. Has become a place for people to have drinks. Definitely recommend to visit as group. Visiting alone might be a little risky.
It says 1908 etched on the front facade of the building. No solid cement pillers, all by brick construction. British construction, It's sad to see the historical building are not maintained by civic bodies.
This is an old British town very old building. Children's are not allowed in this place. It was very dangerous area.
