Nilgiri Mountain Railway Museum - Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India - Museum in Mettupalayam - Coimbatore, India

Mettapalayam is base station of Nilgiri Mountain Railways going to Ooty via Coonoor. This hill train of British era is now preserved under UNESCO World Heritage. It's well maintained. Only one morning train from Mettapalayam to Ooty at 7.10 am daily. Only 4 coaches - 1 First Class reserved, 2 Second Class reserved & 1 General unreserved. If you want to travel Ooty or Coonoor then you must book the tickets well in advance on IRCTC website. Search between station MTP & ONR for Coonoor or MTP & UAM for Ooty. Tickets are very cheap so my advise is to book in advance even if your plan is tentative. 3.5 hours journey till Coonoor and 4.5 hours till Ooty. There are only few small stations in between for watering steam engine till Coonoor. After that diesel engine is changed. Small size luggage can be put under your seats. There is no toilet in the train. But you can use one at the halt stations. Train will not leave behind you as it's very small train with railway guard in every coach who takes care. For beautiful journey of this train, pls check pics. It's marvelous and Ooty/ Coonoor trip without this train journey is incomplete in my view.

Rail Museum is situated near the railway platform in Metupalayam. Must visit if we need to know the way about the various tracks, metre gauge, narrow gauge, broad gauge, pinion tracking, track changing mechanism, communication, signalling etc. There is no ticket and it free of cost. We can easily spend 20 to 30 minutes here. Also has the model display of various trains running in India including Vandae Bharat

Honestly it was my first experience with the railway equipments so closely. Though there were very few visitors and its located in a small station , it was absolutely clean and calm. The Center wooden rail structure is beautiful. This visit was so informative that you will never forget this place. And in my knowledge, there is no such place elsewhere. The best part , there is no entry fees. There is no restriction for clicking pictures. Everything is having a informational quote nearby. It's a amazing place please don't miss this place . It's in front of the main saltation building near the yellow green colour Crain machine.

The museum is present near the Mettupalayam railway track. It has all the details about ancient railway network history. Original parts of trains and other things can be observed here. There is no entry fee.

Fantastic experience. Should use this during rainy or winter season. If you doen get tickets from Ooty to Metupalayam , try in two Ooty to cunnoor and cunoor to Matupalaya m.I got my ticket booked this way L.

Must visit for any person, once in a lifetime experience. The view of the marvellous scenery as the train traverse within the nilgris hills is breathtaking for real.

This museum is being maintained with utmost care preserving & showcasing the railway equipment that was used from mid 1800 to current date. It opens from 06:30 to 19:00. The entrance is free. Just enter your details at the entrance.few content is in Tamil language. It showcases the Indian political leaders who have visited the place earlier. The relays, morse code generator, fuse plugs, head lamps, pinion wheel used etc.

Heritage, vintage r old what ever it is, traveling in this train is an wonderful experience.
